S&P 500 Rises 1.5%, Dow Jumps 3% Post-Election
S&P 500 rallied by 1.5% and Dow Industrials was up a whopping 3% on post-election Wednesday, jumping to its highest level in two months. Concerns over the slowdown of the AI capex boom that sank futures overnight on signs of a strong showing by the Democrats gave way to optimism that greater military restraint in the Middle East will contain oil prices and curb inflation. Indeed, WTI Crude Oil fell by nearly 10% below $90 per barrel and Energy was by far the worst-performing sector in the benchmark S&P. Treasuries also resumed their rally, with the yield on the 10-year falling below 4.9%. Among the strongest sectors, Consumer stocks were disproportionally higher - Cyclicals and Staples bounced on expectations of greater consumer buying power and diminished risk of job displacement from the AI revolution. In the opening hour of the evening session, Nasdaq 100 futures are a little changed and S&P e-Minis are up 0.1%. Among notable post-earnings decliners among the semis, ARM Holdings and Qualcomm were down after their results.
