The major averages closed sharply lower to kick off September amid increasing tensions between the U.S. and Iran. Inflation concerns and surging oil prices lifted bond yields in the U.S. and elsewhere as worries continue to mount over whether the Federal Reserve will tighten monetary policy later this month.U.S. Central Command announced that U.S. forces began striking Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targets in Iran. The major averages were broadly lower to start the month of September as inflation concerns and rising oil prices lifted bond yields in the U.S. and elsewhere. Worries continue to mount over whether the Federal Reserve will tighten monetary policy later this month.In other economic data news, the ISM Manufacturing PMI fell to 54.6 in August from July's near four-year high of 55.6, below market expectations of 55.2. The news comes as the JOLTS report said that job openings in the U.S. increased by 89,000 to 7.271M in July from a downwardly revised 7.182M in June. Stock Futures Weaker as Oil Prices Rise Above $90
Stock futures are pointing to a weaker open as investors begin September facing a renewed combination of geopolitical risk, higher oil prices and rising Treasury yields. Notably, ISM manufacturing data and the July JOLTS report are both due at 10 a.m. ET.Brent crude has climbed back above $90 a barrel, reviving concerns that an extended disruption to energy supplies could push inflation higher.
