Retractable Technologies Cuts Workforce by 16% to Save $2.2M

Retractable Technologies reported that it has reduced its workforce by approximately 16%. The reduction is expected to save an estimated $2.2M in annual wages and employment benefits, or approximately 13% of total estimated workforce costs. The expected savings are offset by estimated one-time separation payments of approximately $122,000 to the affected workers. Approximately 58% of the targeted payroll reduction affects manufacturing or manufacturing support positions and the remainder of the reductions affects sales and sales support roles. The company said, "The move comes as the Company continues to strengthen its domestic production capabilities and increase manufacturing efficiencies, reducing its reliance on importing products from its contract manufacturers in China. While contract manufacturers in China have historically produced most of the products the Company sells, the financial impact of tariffs on imports from China has caused the Company to increase its domestic production where practical in order to mitigate the cost of importing. While the increase in domestic manufacturing lessens the negative financial impact of tariffs, the Company is still reliant on Chinese imports for products we are unable to produce with our current manufacturing equipment."

Retractable Technologies announces 7% workforce reduction

Retractable Technologies reports that it has reduced its workforce by approximately 7%. The reduction is expected to save an estimated $1.6M in annual wages and benefits, or approximately 7.8% of total estimated workforce costs. The expected savings is offset by one-time separation payments of approximately $300,000 to the affected workers. Approximately 72% of the targeted payroll reduction affects general and administrative functions, with the remainder coming from manufacturing or manufacturing support positions. The move comes as the company continues to allocate more of its resources to increase its U.S. manufacturing capabilities and reduce reliance on products produced in China. While contract manufacturers in China have historically produced most of the products the company sells, the material financial impact of tariffs on imports from China eliminates the company's ability to continue the practice. As a result, the company will work to minimize its exposure to the tariffs and strategically import only those products which it cannot make domestically and rely on its Little Elm facility to produce the majority of its products. The company is unable to predict future U.S. trade policy, or the potential impact it may have on the company's ability to import products from China or other countries.

Retractable Technologies withdraws complaint in Court of International Trade

Retractable Technologies announced that it has withdrawn its complaint in the United States Court of International Trade against the defendants involved in the issuance of a 100% tariff on syringes and needles imported from China. As a result, the case was dismissed effective January 8, 2025. "Initial investigations into the matter convinced RTI management that although the tariffs were not properly implemented, there was no chance of RTI being granted additional time to increase domestic production without tariffs and the chances of a small company prevailing against the interests of a large monopolistic corporation at this time in history were slim to none. Meanwhile, RTI engineers have, through creative adaptation of some of our older equipment, been able to enhance the transition process, which will significantly reduce the need to import syringes. RTI management expects these efforts to diminish the risks to the continued survival of the company brought about by the recent tariffs."
