Azitra CEO: Significant Progress in Q2

"The second quarter has marked an exciting evolution for Azitra with the first data from our ATR-COSF program, which provided validation of our strategy to leverage our microbial genetic engineering platform beyond traditional therapeutics," said Francisco Salva, Chief Executive Officer of Azitra. "Combined with the continued advancement of ATR-04 and our recombinant protein initiatives, these accomplishments reflect the breadth of opportunities we are creating in multiple billion dollar markets, including therapeutics, cosmetic ingredients and biotechnology applications. During the quarter, we also continued enrollment of the first cohort in our Phase 1/2 clinical trial evaluating ATR-04 for EGFR inhibitor-associated rash. With six active clinical sites, including MD Anderson Cancer Center, we remain on track to report topline data from the first cohort around year end. Additionally, we are in the process to open eligibility criteria to other cancer treatment related rashes driven by inhibitors along the same EGFR/KRAS/MEK/ERK pathway. EGFR inhibitor-associated rash remains a significant unmet medical need, affecting an estimated 50% to 90% of patients receiving EGFR-targeted cancer therapies and frequently leading to dose reductions, treatment interruptions or discontinuation."

Azitra CEO Discusses Company Strategy and ATR COSF Commercial Potential

In an exclusive interview, AzitraCEO Francisco Salva spoke with The Fly about the company's expanding strategy, the science behind its recombinant protein programs, the commercial potential of ATR COSF, and how the company is redefining its identity beyond precision dermatology.THE COMPANY:Azitra is a microbial genetic engineering company developing products across therapeutics, cosmeceuticals, and biotechnology applications. While its roots are in precision dermatology – including ATR 04 for EGFR inhibitor associated rash – the company is leveraging the same underlying technology to create recombinant proteins for consumer skincare and broader biotech markets."At its core, Azitra is a microbial genetic engineering company," the CEO told The Fly. "What makes us unique is that we're building a platform capable of generating multiple commercial opportunities from the same core technology."UPDATED STRATEGY:Azitra's recently updated corporate strategy reflects a broader view of how its platform can create value. The company remains committed to advancing therapies for patients with unmet medical needs, but it is also accelerating programs with shorter development timelines and larger commercial markets.The March financing enabled this expansion, with ATR COSF emerging as the first example. Originally rooted in therapeutic research on recombinant filaggrin, ATR COSF is now being advanced as a cosmetic ingredient designed to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Additional recombinant protein programs, like TEV Protease and T7 RNA Polymerase, further demonstrate the platform's versatility."These initiatives create multiple pathways for growth," the executive said.ATR-COSF:Salva highlighted ATR COSF as "one of the most exciting initiatives enabled by the March financing," and early data supports that enthusiasm.Two preliminary studies evaluated the distribution and functional activity of Azitra's filaggrin domain containing supernatant. The company demonstrated successful, controlled delivery of the domain into the stratum granulosum – the targeted layer of the skin – with increased distribution compared to prior single dose human skin experiments. Additionally, single dose ex vivo studies showed improvements in elasticity and enhanced hydration, reinforcing early signals that ATR COSF may support cosmetic applications as a high value ingredient.The planned clinical study will serve as a proof of concept milestone, assessing safety and early efficacy, including the ingredient's ability to improve fine lines and wrinkles."Successfully demonstrating those attributes would represent an important step toward validating the commercial potential of the program," the executive said. Assuming positive results, Azitra believes ATR COSF could support partnership discussions and commercialization opportunities beginning as early as 2027.NEAR-TERM MILESTONES:Azitra expects a steady cadence of milestones across both its therapeutic pipeline and its expanding platform initiatives. On the clinical side, the company is advancing the Phase 1/2 study of ATR 04 for EGFR inhibitor associated rash, with topline data from the Phase 1 portion expected in the second half of this year.Preparations are also underway for the planned clinical study of ATR COSF, which the company views as an important validation of its move into cosmeceuticals. Beyond these programs, Azitra continues to progress its recombinant protein initiatives, including Tobacco Etch Virus Protease and T7 RNA Polymerase."These programs represent early proof points for our broader microbial genetic engineering capabilities," the executive noted.AN EVOLVING COMPANY:The CEO emphasized the importance of understanding how the company is evolving."Historically, investors have known us as a clinical stage precision dermatology company," the executive said.
