KeyBanc Says SpaceX Spectrum Acquisition Positive for Tower Operators

After SpaceX (SPCX) announced plans to acquire up to 14MHz of paired nationwide spectrum in the 800MHz band to be utilized by its upcoming Starlink Mobile service, KeyBanc analyst Brandon Nispel called this news a positive for the tower operators as it "appears SpaceX terrestrial plans are shifting from Femtocells to terrestrial Tower deployments." Given SpaceX's previous AWS-4 acquisition and now this, it seems possible SpaceX could take over DISH leases, which the firm "did not think was plausible previously," the analyst added.

AT&T Selects Ericsson to Provide 600 MHz Radios

AT&T (T) has selected Ericsson (ERIC) to provide 600 MHz dual-band radios to support deployment of newly acquired spectrum from EchoStar (SATS). "We're more than halfway through our wireless network modernization, and we're executing to plan," said Yigal Elbaz, SVP and Network CTO, AT&T. "By combining our newly acquired 600 MHz spectrum with Ericsson's advanced radios, we're improving coverage and performance for customers while building a more modern, flexible network for the future."

Hughes Satellite Systems Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection

Hughes Satellite Systems Corporation earlier announced that it and certain of its U.S. subsidiaries, including Hughes Network Systems, LLC, have filed voluntary chapter 11 petitions in the Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas, Houston Division to facilitate a financial and operational reorganization. This reorganization will allow the company to address its maturing secured and unsecured debt, strengthen its capital structure, and accelerate its ongoing transformation into an enterprise, government, and defense-focused business-all while continuing to serve its customers. Hughes has sufficient liquidity to fund its operations in the near-term and will seek to use its existing cash as it works to right-size the company's balance sheet. EchoStar Corporation, EchoStar's non-Hughes subsidiaries, and Hughes Satellite Systems Corporation's international subsidiaries are not included in Hughes' chapter 11 filing. Hughes' chapter 11 filing has no impact on EchoStar's other operations, employees or brands, including DISH TV, Sling TV, and Boost Mobile.
