Roth Capital Analyst Says SpaceX Exploring Tower Leasing at 80,000 Sites
Roth Capital analyst Scott Searle weighs in following Bloomberg's report that SpaceX (SPCX) is exploring options to lease tower capacity at 80,000 sites. The move is presumably part of SpaceX's strategy to build a complementary terrestrial network to support its direct-to-device satellite constellation to compete with incumbent U.S.-based Tier 1 mobile network operators, the analyst tells investors in a research note. Roth says potential winners of SpaceX's buildout include AST SpaceMobile (ASTS), RAN suppliers Ericsson (ERIC) and Nokia (NOK), as well as wireless backhaul suppliers Aviat Networks (AVNW) and Ceragon Networks (CRNT) and spectrum holders Anterix (ATEX), NextNav (NN), and Gogo (GOGO).
Roth Capital Says SpaceX Acquires Low-Band Spectrum for $8B
Roth Capital says SpaceX (SPCX) continues its spectrum grab with its purchase of low-band spectrum from Grain Management for a reported $8B. The early implications are increased competition for terrestrial mobile network operators and other device-to-device services like AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) and Amazon Leo (AMZN), the analyst tells investors in a research note. Roth believes the SpaceX purchase "should push a cozier relationship" between AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) and tier 1 mobile operators Verizon (VZ), AT&T (T) and T-Mobile (TMUS). AST will become the preferred neutral device-to-device satellite partner, contends the firm. Roth also sees low band spectrum increasing in value, which is views as positive for Anterix (ATEX), NextNav (NN) and Gogo (GOGO). At a similar megahertz value to what SpaceX paid, Gogo would be valued at $2.3B for spectrum alone versus its current $1B enterprise value, Roth contends. The firm also sees backhaul and access opportunities for Aviat Networks (AVNW) and Ceragon Networks (CRNT) for either a SpaceX terrestrial network buildout or competitive investment from the mobile operators.
Anterix Announces iPhone 18 Pro Supports Private LTE Networks
Anterix (ATEX) announced that the new iPhone (AAPL) 18 Pro and iPhone Duo are the first iPhone models to operate on private LTE networks using Anterix 900 MHz spectrum. "When we started down this path, private wireless was a very different market," said Carlos L'Abbate, Chief Technology and Engineering Officer of Anterix. "Today, an iPhone, which is used every day by millions of people, can now operate on the same private 900 MHz network infrastructure that supports mission-critical operations. It is another clear sign that dedicated private wireless networks are becoming mainstream communications platforms."
Anterix Appoints Kim Green-Kerr as Chief Revenue Officer
Anterix announced the appointment of Kim Green-Kerr as chief revenue officer. She joins Anterix as utilities and critical infrastructure operators accelerate investment in connectivity to run a more intelligent, automated grid. In her role, Green-Kerr will lead Anterix's commercial organization and go-to-market strategy. Green-Kerr most recently served as senior VP of enterprise sales and operations at UScellular.
Anterix and Lynk Global Receive FCC Experimental License
Anterix and Lynk Global announced that the Federal Communications Commission has approved an experimental license to explore the use of Lynk's satellite direct-to-device communications network in Anterix's licensed 900 MHz broadband spectrum. Across multiple geographic locations, the parties will test representative communications devices, from land mobile radios, smart phones, and computers to advanced routers and edge devices.
