Planet Labs Subsidiary Selected by ESA to Build Slovenia Space Resilience Node
Planet Labs announced Planet's subsidiary Sinergise Solutions d.o.o. has been selected by the European Space Agency, ESA, to build the Slovenia Space Resilience Node, SRN. Running under ESA's European Resilience from Space Earth Observation program under Element 2, the 12-month pilot project will develop a prototype that automates the link between wide-area satellite change detection and high-resolution imaging tasking for Slovenia's Administration for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief within the Ministry of Defence.
Planet Labs Successfully Launches 20 Satellites
Planet Labs "announced the successful launch of 20 satellites: the first demo mission for Google's Project Suncatcher; Tanager-2, its latest hyperspectral satellite; and 18 SuperDoves. The spacecraft were launched to orbit aboard the Transporter-18 rideshare mission with SpaceX from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Planet has successfully made initial contact with Tanager-2, the Project Suncatcher prototype, and two SuperDoves and begun the commissioning process. Planet expects to make contact with the remaining 16 SuperDoves that will deploy on the D-Orbit ION orbital transfer vehicle on schedule. This marks Planet's 40th successful launch and a total of 718 satellites built and delivered on orbit. Developed in partnership with Google, the Project Suncatcher satellite will run the first-ever test of Google's Tensor Processing Units in space. The moonshot project is exploring the feasibility of running machine learning (ML) compute systems in-orbit."
Planet Labs' Updated Pelican-12 Arrives in Florida for Launch
Planet Labs PBC (PL) announced that Pelican-12, an updated second generation high resolution Pelican, has arrived at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida ahead of its launch aboard the upcoming Bandwagon-5 rideshare mission with SpaceX (SPCX).
Planet Labs Launches Amazon.ia Initiative, Secures Over $14M Support
Planet Labs PBC announced the launch of Amazon.ia - Inteligencia Ambiental, an ambitious multi-partner initiative dedicated to producing timely, actionable intelligence on biodiversity to drive effective conservation and restoration across the Amazon. The initiative is supported by many partners, including Planet and the Bezos Earth Fund, which granted more than $14M across both the Andes Amazon Fund and the World Resources Institute to support work on the initiative. "At the Bezos Earth Fund, we're committed to protecting and restoring nature - and the Amazon is one of the most important and diverse places on Earth. Understanding how it's changing across millions of square miles remains extraordinarily difficult, and we know that our work requires inventing new tools, not just scaling existing ones to meet this challenge," stated Dr. Cristian Samper, Managing Director and Leader for Nature Solutions, Bezos Earth Fund. "Amazon.ia brings together leading partners and technologies to build something that does not exist today: a more complete, dynamic understanding of biodiversity and ecosystem health across the Amazon. By combining cutting-edge technology with scientific expertise and local knowledge, we hope to equip conservation leaders with the information they need to act faster and more effectively."
Planet Labs Opens Satellite Manufacturing Facility in Berlin
Planet Labs welcomed Katherina Reiche, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy for Germany, to open its state-of-the-art satellite manufacturing facility in Berlin. Having been announced less than a year ago, Planet has achieved facility handover and cleanroom fit-out and is scheduled to commence production of its 300 kg class, 30-cm resolution class Pelican satellites this autumn. The first satellite is scheduled to be complete before the end of the year, and the facility will be able to scale to up to 60 satellites per year. The facility further establishes Berlin as a major European hub for advanced aerospace manufacturing and production, accelerating high-tech job growth and Europe's sovereign Earth observation capabilities.
