Intel Acquires Classiq to Advance Quantum Computing
Welcome to the latest edition of "Quantum Leap" where The Fly decodes news and activity in the quantum computing space.M&A:Intelhas entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Classiq, a provider of quantum computing software. The combination of Classiq's synthesis platform with Intel's spin-qubit manufacturing and existing software would create a full-stack quantum computing platform. The company said, "Since 2015, Intel has been investing in the development of quantum computing, and today it is the only company capable of producing qubit chips and complex cryogenic control electronics at-scale, using equipment and processes common to conventional silicon-based semiconductor manufacturing." Following the close of the transaction, Intel intends to continue to support Classiq's existing multi-platform integrations and ensure a modality- and hardware-agnostic software solution that continues to enable a quantum software ecosystem. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the first half of 2027. Until closing, Intel and Classiq will continue to operate as separate, independent companies.SOUTH KOREA MOU:D-Wave Quantumand LG CNS have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to advance the adoption of quantum computing for enterprise optimization in South Korea and international markets. The collaboration will focus on applying D-Wave's annealing quantum computing technology to complex optimization challenges, with the goal of moving applications from proof of concept into production. D-Wave CEO Alan Baratz and LG CNS President and CEO Hyun Shin-Gyoon announced the MOU onstage at D-Wave's Qubits Asia conference in Seoul. The companies intend to combine D-Wave's annealing quantum computing technologies with LG CNS's industry expertise, mathematical optimization capabilities and systems integration experience to develop applications for customers in manufacturing, telecommunications, finance and retail. The companies also intend to pursue joint go-to-market opportunities. LG CNS brings mathematical optimization expertise across industries, including manufacturing and the public sector, with end-to-end capabilities spanning problem definition, mathematical modeling, algorithm validation and real-world implementation. LG CNS has also been conducting research on applying mathematical optimization and quantum computing to real-world industrial challenges, including image reconstruction and inspection and the detection of underground anomalies.POST-QUANTUM SECURITY FOR SATELLITES:WISeSat.Spaceand Kaynes Space Technology, a subsidiary of Kaynes Technology India, expanded their strategic collaboration to develop post-quantum security solutions for satellites manufactured in India. The partners aim to combine Kaynes' satellite engineering and manufacturing capabilities with WISeSat.Space's secure space infrastructure expertise and post-quantum semiconductor technologies by its sister company, Sealsq. The objective is to embed security into satellite platforms from the design stage, protecting communications across spacecraft, ground stations and connected devices. Specific satellite platforms, technical milestones, qualification requirements and deployment schedules will be defined jointly as the development program progresses. "Our focus is on translating this development work into validated solutions and commercial opportunities that can support long-term revenue growth," said Carlos Moreira, founder and chairman of WISeSat.Space.AFRL FOLLOW-ON CONTRACT:IonQhas received $7.5M in follow-on funding from the Air Force Research Laboratory, or AFRL. The Phase 2 contract expands upon the first-generation quantum network IonQ previously delivered in Rome, New York. Phase 1 established the core physical network foundation. Phase 2 equips AFRL with additional capabilities needed to connect different types of quantum hardware across non-laboratory environments.SPACE-ENABLED SERVICES LOI:Sealsq, together with its sister company, WISeSat.Space, signed a binding letter of intent contemplating Sealsq's acquisition of satellite capacity associated with 12 WISeSat.Space satellites, together with access to related mission control, ground segment, and operational support services. The proposed transaction, involving consideration of approximately $15M is intended to support space-to-device communications and secured transactions for the development of the Quantum Spatial Orbital Cloud, or QSOC. For Sealsq, the letter of intent provides the initial infrastructure needed to extend its semiconductor security, digital identity and cryptographic-key management technologies into space-enabled services. Sealsq intends to develop and commercialize QSOC's security-services layer, creating a potential source of recurring subscription revenue from government and enterprise customers. The letter of intent covers capacity associated with an initial fleet of 12 satellites, together with mission control, ground segment and operational support services, providing the orbital and terrestrial infrastructure needed to support QSOC's development. The ground station is intended to connect the satellite network with terrestrial systems, supporting communications, secure data exchange and integration with Sealsq's planned security services. Together, the satellites and ground station would support the integrating semiconductor security, digital identity and cryptographic-key management across the network. Under the proposed operating model, WISeSat.Space would be responsible for the supply and launch of the satellites, for providing access to the initial constellation, and for operating the ground station, mission control and associated infrastructure, while Sealsq would develop and commercialize the security-services layer. The objective is to offer subscription-based services to governments, financial institutions, defense organizations and critical-infrastructure operators.QUANTUM COMPUTER IN MADRID:Telefonica and IQM Quantum Computershave joined forces to deploy the first quantum computer in the Community of Madrid. The initiative will strengthen the region's scientific and technological capabilities, while driving the development of real-world cases for companies across the Community of Madrid. The IQM Spark quantum computer will be installed at the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid before the end of 2026.
