Chewy Short Interest Rises to 52.3%

Welcome to this week's installment of "The Short Interest Report" - The Fly's weekly recap of short interest trends among some of the most widely followed high-short-float stocks. Using the data from our partner, which utilizes the latest information from stock lenders to estimate short interest changes for thousands of publicly traded companies, this report will screen for some of biggest changes in short interest as a percentage of free float and days-to-cover ratios while also considering the short interest data on some of the more volatile and heavier-traded names of the week. Based on the availability of data from Ortex, the report tracks the trading period that covers prior Friday through Thursday of this week, excluding holidays. As a basis of comparison for stocks discussed below, the S&P 500 index was up 0.2%, the Nasdaq Composite was up 0.2%, the Russell 2000 index was down 1.5%, the Russell 2000 Growth ETFwas down 2.5% and the Russell 2000 Value ETFwas down 0.5% in the five-day trading session range through September 3.SHORT INTEREST GAINERSOrtex-reported short interest in Chewytroughed at a three-month low of 46.2% on August 26 as continued strength in the stock through August prompted the bears to reduce exposure. That trend reversed this week, however, with short interest as a percentage of free float climbing from 47.6% to 52.3%, signaling renewed bearish positioning ahead of the company's earnings report next week. Days-to-cover rose by a modest margin from 2.3 to 2.6, with trading volumes elevated in the past 5 trading sessions. Shares gained 5% during the five-day period covered through Thursday but remain down 28% year-to-date. Wall Street sentiment heading into the print is also mixed, with Mizuho analysts flagging the potential for increased investment aimed at reaccelerating growth, while Raymond James has pointed to relatively low expectations coming into the quarter.Ortex-reported short interest in U-Haulhas tracked the stock's downward price trend since shares peaked in the immediate aftermath of the company's in-line Q2 results on August 5, with the stock subsequently falling more than 10%. Bearish positioning also steadily eased alongside the decline, with short interest as a percentage of free float falling from 25.5% to around 20% by August 25th. That multi-week slide has stalled this week, however, as short interest nudged higher from 20.5% to 21.4%. Days-to-cover also increased from 7.3 to 8.0 as trading volumes picked up in September from more subdued August levels. The stock was down 1% in the five-day period covered through Thursday, but remains up 34% year-to-date.SHORT INTEREST DECLINERSOrtex-reported short interest in Robert Halfhas remained elevated in a roughly 23.5%-30% range since mid-March, even as the stock price has more than doubled over that span. The persistent bearish positioning has reflected concerns over the impact of AI on the staffing industry, though that thesis—at least in the near term—has been challenged by resilient labor-market data. This week, bears are possibly showing signs of greater capitulation, with short interest as a percentage of free float falling from 25.1% to below 23.5%, its lowest level in five months. Days-to-cover also declined from 9.8 to 9.4. Shares slipped 4.4% during the five-day period covered through Thursday but thanks to the bounce from May to August, have now risen 57% year-to-date.Sphere Entertainmenthas truly captured magic in a bottle with its Las Vegas "Wizard of Oz" experience and its ambitious plans for a global network expansion - the stock has quadrupled from mid-August of last year to mid-August of 2026. Even with a 28% decline over the past three weeks, Sphere Entertainment is still up 50% year to date. Bears are also leery that the retreat in the stock price will be bought, using the pullback as an opportunity to book profits. This week, short interest as a percentage of free float slipped by a percentage point to 25.2%, which also marked the fourth consecutive week of reduced bearish exposure and a 2-year low.
