S&P 500 Edges Up, Western Digital Falls 7%
After three days of losses, the S&P 500 eked out modest gains on Wednesday, even though AI CapEx build-out themed areas of the market remained under heavy pressure. 2026 winners such as Seagate, Western Digitaland Dellwere some of the biggest losers in the benchmark, with declines of 8%, 7%, and 7%, respectively. Enterprise software continued to balance out the recent weakness in the semiconductors, computer hardware, and semi equipment sectors. Outside of Tech, Industrials was the worst performing sector in the S&P 500, while Basic Materials and Healthcare let the rebound.U.S. Treasury was effective as a "plunge protection" actor in fixed income markets today, announcing that effective September 9th, it will double its operation in purchases of longer-dated treasury securities. Longer-dated yields caved on the announcement, with the 10-year slipping 5 basis points and the 30-year - which had risen to 19-year highs overnight - down 9 basis points. Minutes of the Federal Reserve meeting in July did not spoil the Treasury rebound party, even though they revealed that "many participants assessed that policy tightening would likely be necessary if inflation did not decline".In the opening hour of the evening session, sentiment remains upbeat with S&P e-minis up 0.2% and NASDAQ-100 contract up 0.5%. WTI crude oil continues to reflect the stalemate in the Strait of Hormuz, trading little changed around $84 per barrel.
