Tech Weakness Weighs on S&P 500 and Nasdaq

Fragile sentiment in the tech space weighed on broader indices as S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite begin the final full week of August with a loss.  Semiconductors and memory stocks were the hardest hit on Monday as investors digest capital return announcement from Samsunglate last week, fret about press reports that Nvidiahas flagged price hikes, and also position for Nvidia earnings, PCE inflation, and Fed Chair Wash speech at Jackson Hole this week.  Technology and Industrials were the worst-performing sectors in the benchmark index.  In turn, Consumer Defensive names outperformed, with traders rotating into discount  retail giants that fell out of favor last week on disappointing results - Walmartwas up 2.7% and Costcowas up 2.5%.  Credit Services was also strong as Visaand Mastercardboth gained over 3% on Monday.In the opening hour of the evening session index futures are a little changed - S&P e-minis and Nasdaq 100 contracts are just above 7,670 and 29,100 respectively.   In commodities, WTI Crude Oil continues to trade in a narrow band in the mid-$80s.  Precious metals however have sustained their furious rebound - Gold prices were at 3-month highs near $4,740 and Silver is targeting a breach above $70 per ounce.Check out this evening's top movers from around Wall Street, compiled by The Fly.HIGHER -Kura Oncologyup 6.3% after insider buyHerc Holdingsup 1.5% after insider buyVistraup 0.9% after insider buyBoeingup 0.4% after $131B USAF contractDOWN AFTER EARNINGS -Gorilla Technologydown 9.0%PicS N.V.down 2.7%ALSO LOWER -Daqo New Energydown 1.9% after Goldman Sachs downgradeTrade Deskdown 1.0% after mixed shelf offering

Trump Administration to Set Price Floor on Polysilicon

Companies in the space include Corning, Daqo New Energy, T1 Energy, and Canadian Solar.LITHIUM-ION BATTERY, TUNGSTEN WASTE:The U.S. is banning the export of lithium-ion battery and tungsten waste in an effort to curb its reliance on China and secure more of the critical materials its defense industry needs, The Wall Street Journal's Kim Mackrael. Beginning later this month, certain battery scrap and tungsten waste in the U.S. must be sold domestically, according to a Department of Commerce rule published on the Federal Register. The ban will be in effect for a year.TRUMP ACCOUNTS:Strategywill contribute $250 each year to a Trump Account for every eligible child under 18 of its U.S. employees, regardless of the child's birth year. For children born on or after January 1, 2025, Strategy will also make a one-time $1,000 contribution matching the U.S. government's seed contribution in the child's birth year.JONES ACT WAIVER:The White House is expected to extend the Jones Act waiver to preserve shipping flexibility and help lower gasoline prices, while officials consider narrowing its scope before the current exemption expires on August 16, Reuters' Jarrett Renshaw and Arathy Somasekhar. President Trump said on Monday that ExxonMobiland Chevronare "making too much money," urging them to "give some of that back to the public" by lowering gasoline prices.ROGUE AI:Staff from Meta, Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI intend to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump's advisers on Tuesday to discuss voluntary testing for advanced AI models amid mounting concerns over rogue AI agents, Reuters' Courtney Rozen, citing four sources familiar with the meeting. The meeting comes after OpenAI and Anthropic disclosed that their AI tools breached systems of other companies, with such hacks raising concerns among U.S. lawmakers about whether advanced AI models could be used to conduct or facilitate more hacks, the author notes.

Daqo New Energy Signs Investment Agreement with Kunshan

Daqo New Energy announced that its subsidiary, Daqo Energy Technology has signed an investment agreement with the Management Committee of the Kunshan Economic and Technological Development Zone to establish a new manufacturing base. This manufacturing base will focus on the research, development, manufacturing, and sale of next-generation energy solutions and related equipment for artificial intelligence data centers, or AIDCs, including energy storage systems, solid-state transformers, solid-state circuit breakers, and solid-state batteries. The project will be built in two phases, with a Phase 1 investment of approximately RMB 2.1B. Phase 2 will commence at a later date, subject to the project fulfilling relevant industrial policy and investment requirements. The total project investment is preliminarily expected to be approximately RMB 6B. As this project is still in the preparatory stage, the impact of this investment on the Company's future performance cannot be determined at this time.
