Bell Canada and Cisco Collaborate on Sovereign AI Infrastructure
Bell Canada (BCE) and Cisco (CSCO) announced a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on a sovereign AI infrastructure offering for Canada, bringing together Bell's data centre, network and operations capabilities with Cisco's AI, security, observability, infrastructure monitoring and management, and Sovereign Critical Infrastructure technologies. Together, the companies will work on a practical approach intended to help Canadian organizations deploy, secure and manage AI infrastructure in Canada, while giving customers more flexibility in how they access and scale sovereign AI capacity.
Anderon Secures $1 Billion Award Under Chips and Science Act
Welcome to the latest edition of "Quantum Leap" where The Fly decodes news and activity in the quantum computing space.CHIPS AND SCIENCE ACT AWARD:Anderon, an IBMcompany, announced the finalization of a $1B award under the Chips and Science Act with the U.S. Department of Commerce. The award will accelerate Anderon's R&D efforts to advance the nation's quantum wafer manufacturing capabilities. Announced in May under a letter of intent between the Department and IBM, Anderon operates a 300-millimeter quantum wafer foundry, backed by an additional $1B investment from IBM. Headquartered in Albany, New York, the new venture offers quantum wafer manufacturing to customers across the ecosystem.QUANTUM WORLD CONGRESS:D-Wave Quantumreported its participation as a sponsor of Quantum World Congress, taking place September 23-25 in College Park, Maryland. At Quantum World Congress, D-Wave will demonstrate that the quantum era is multi-platform with different quantum computing technologies to address different types of computational problems. The company will present results from annealing quantum computing applications solving complex commercial and public-sector optimization problems. In addition, it will provide updates on its dual-rail gate-model architecture, designed to reduce the cost and complexity of quantum error correction, a critical requirement for enabling applications well suited to gate-model quantum computing, such as quantum chemistry and materials simulation.IQM SPARK SALE:IQM Quantum Computersdisclosed that Toyohas purchased a second full-stack quantum computer, IQM Spark. This expands Toyo's quantum footprint and reinforces IQM's commitment to driving quantum acceleration in Japan. The Spark system will be installed at Toyo's R&D center in Kiba, Tokyo, and will be operational in early 2027.CUDA-Q LOGICAL:Nvidiaexpanded the Nvidia CUDA-Q open-source platform with CUDA-Q Logical, an orchestration layer that provides an approach to developing applications for fault-tolerant quantum computers. With CUDA-Q Logical, researchers can now design and orchestrate the many components required for fault-tolerant quantum computing applications, switching between options to identify optimal system configurations for performance with logical qubits. CUDA-Q Logical is already being used by QPU makers and labs including Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Infleqtion, IQM Quantum Computers, QCDesign Quantum Motion and Sandia National Laboratories. Infleqtion announced results from its integration of Nvidia CUDA-Q Logical with the qLDPC open-source library for quantum error correction research. Working with an early-access version of CUDA-Q Logical, Infleqtion researchers constructed and validated a high-rate quantum error correction code that uses approximately six physical data qubits per logical qubit, representing about a fivefold improvement in code rate over the surface-code approach used for comparison.HAMAD BIN KHALIFA PACT:Quantum Computingsigned a three-year framework agreement with Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Qatar to collaborate in quantum computing, quantum sensing, and quantum communications. The partnership in a specific focus area for HBKU establishes a foundation for joint academic research, executive education programs, industry-focused projects, applications development, and co-marketing initiatives to accelerate the adoption of quantum technologies across Qatar and beyond.QUANTUM SYSTEMS COLLABORATION:Infleqtion announced a collaboration with Ciscoto pursue joint research and development focused on connecting, operating, and scaling quantum systems. Together, the companies will explore architectures to link individual devices into distributed, more capable networks, an important step toward making distributed quantum systems a reality.BACKLINE:Xanadu Quantumin collaboration with AMDreleased Backline, an open-platform solution, co-designed by Xanadu and AMD, for rapid communications between quantum and classical computing hardware. Backline is built using Xanadu's open-source PennyLane software platform to solve how to establish ultra-low-latency communication between classical processors and quantum hardware. "Quantum processors require ultra-fast classical infrastructure, operating behind the scenes," said Christian Weedbrook, founder and CEO of Xanadu. "By integrating Backline into PennyLane, we are providing direct access to the communication layers that the industry needs to move from laboratory R&D to real-world performance. Our work with AMD shows that AMD's hardware can handle these demanding latency budgets right now, even with standard CPUs, bringing useful quantum computing closer to reality."ETH ZURICH QUANTUM INNOVATION HUB:IBM and Lockheed Martin, through an offset agreement with armasuisse, Switzerland's Federal Office for Defence Procurement, established a hub for quantum innovation at ETH Zurich, a public research university. The new hub plans to host the country's first IBM Quantum System Two at the Swiss National Supercomputing Center in Lugano. IBM will operate the IBM Quantum System Two, which will be powered by an IBM Quantum Nighthawk. The project also advances the ongoing strategic collaboration between Lockheed Martin and IBM, combining Lockheed Martin innovations in quantum sensing and additive manufacturing with IBM's expertise in quantum computing and AI.LUMI AI FACTORY DEPLOYMENT:IQM Quantum Computers noted its upgrade path for a logical-qubit-capable quantum computer. The deployment to the LUMI AI Factory, led by CSC - IT Center for Science, will support R&D efforts toward fault-tolerant quantum computing and advancements in hybrid computing. LUMI-IQ will be delivered in three steps: the first installation of an IQM Halocene H4 system in 2027 with 150 physical qubits and early quantum error correction capabilities. The system will be upgraded in 2028 to lower logical error rates and enable real time error correction. The final upgrade is the installation of the IQM Halocene H5 system in 2029. "These upgrades equip the system towards early fault tolerant quantum computing. After the final upgrade, LUMI-IQ will be capable of fast real time feedback sustaining logical qubits and enabling full logical operations between the qubits, including lattice surgery and T-gate teleportation. With distance three surface code and color code, the system will enable computations with up to nine logical qubits," the company stated.
