Union Pacific CFO Jennifer Hamann to Retire in Early 2027
Union Pacific Railroad announced Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, CFO, Jennifer Hamann will retire in early 2027. The company will announce succession plans at a later date.
Union Pacific Railroad Introduces Two Battery-Electric Locomotives
Union Pacific Railroad (UNP) announced the arrival of two battery-electric locomotives in Southern California, part of the company's ongoing investments in testing next-generation technologies in real-world, operating environments. The locomotives are the first of four FLXdrive battery-electric units built by Wabtec (WAB) and ordered by Union Pacific. Two additional locomotives are scheduled to arrive in October, completing the four-unit fleet that will operate in the Greater Los Angeles area. "Union Pacific has never been content to stand still. Our industry is constantly evolving, and if we're not exploring what's next, we risk being left behind," said Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena. "Testing technologies like battery-electric locomotives help us to better understand what's possible by putting these emerging technologies to work in actual railroad operations."
Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern Merger Application Approved
Union Pacific Corporation (UNP) and Norfolk Southern Corporation (NSC) acknowledged two milestones in the creation of America's first transcontinental railroad. The Surface Transportation Board has unanimously denied merger opponents' requests to dismiss the companies' revised merger application. With the rejection of these requests, the board can continue its review of the most comprehensive merger analysis ever submitted in support of a major rail transaction. The facts as evidenced in the application are clear: a seamless, coast-to-coast railroad will provide customers more efficient and affordable freight transportation options and remove more than 2 million truckloads from taxpayer-funded highways. Additionally, the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation's Railroad Mechanical Department has entered a jobs-for-life agreement with the railroads, reflecting a shared commitment to protecting represented jobs and preserving work opportunities. With SMART-MD's support, the merger has support from a majority of unions representing Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern employees. Qs outlined in the application: Every employee with a union job when the merger is approved will continue to have one for life. Customers will gain access to a faster, less expensive cross-country railroad that eliminates time-consuming interchanges. All existing gateways will remain open. In addition to creating seven new premium intermodal lanes, the merger will convert 10,000 existing interline lanes to single-line service. Intermodal will be able to compete and win, removing trucks from congested streets and highways. Merchandise and bulk traffic will move faster with fewer handoffs and be less expensive for the entire movement, reducing inventory and asset costs. Competitors will have to up their game and compete at a higher level. The combined company will offer Committed Gateway Pricing, which will allow more customers to share in the merger's benefits. The transaction remains subject to STB review and approval and will continue to be subject to STB oversight following closing. The two companies expect the transaction to be completed in the second half of 2027.
U.S. Stock Futures Rise as Investors Await Fed Policy Decision
Stock futures are ticking higher as investors await the Federal Reserve's policy decision. The modest rebound follows two sessions of declines and comes as oil prices ease and Treasury yields pull back from recent highs. The 10-year Treasury yield is around 4.97% after briefly topping 5% on Tuesday, its highest level since 2007, while Brent crude is down about 1.5% near $105 a barrel and WTI is below $100.Markets are pricing about a 93% probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike, which would lift the federal-funds target range to 3.75%-4%. The Fed is confronting a difficult combination of stronger-than-expected August payroll growth, hotter producer prices, sticky consumer inflation and oil prices above $100, while higher Treasury yields are already tightening financial conditions. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's 2:30 p.m. ET press conference and the Fed's updated economic projections could therefore generate substantially more market volatility than the rate decision itself. The retreat in oil prices is providing some relief ahead of the decision. Crude has risen sharply in recent weeks as the U.S.-Iran conflict disrupts Middle Eastern energy infrastructure, but reports of increased Saudi crude supplies and an unexpected increase in U.S. inventories are helping prices pull back.In pre-market trading, S&P 500 futures rose 0.24%, Nasdaq futures rose 0.41% and Dow futures rose 0.17%.Check out this morning's top movers from around Wall Street, compiled by The Fly.HIGHER -Alvotechup 5% after Barclays double upgraded the stock to Overweight from Underweight with a price target of $8, up from $4Inteland SKy Hynixboth up 3% after ReutersSK Hynix is in discussions with Intel to potentially manufacture memory chips in the U.S.Union Pacificup 1% after UBS upgraded shares to Buy with a price target of $339, up from $310UP AFTER EARNINGS -LuxExperienceup 14%LOWER -J.B.
