Federal Reserve Raises Rates by 25 Basis Points, Stocks Decline
Stocks fell toward their lowest levels since July as the Federal Reserve followed the bond market's strong conviction of a 25 basis point tightening with its first hike in three years, while the Fed's dot plan and unanimous vote suggest the tightening cycle could well extend in months to come and into 2027. The summary of economic projections shows another expected 25bps move before the of the year. Longer-term, post-decision Fed Funds futures activity now sees an odds-on probability of as many as three more hikes by December of 2027. "Price stability is foundational to economic growth," Fed Chair Warsh opined during his press conference, and while President Trump has been vocal for the Fed to lower interest rates, in his post decision comments to the press, he said Warsh could "do what he wants".Industrials was the best-performing sector in the benchmark index by the end of the session, while Energy and Financials were broadly sold. Regional banks, mortgage finance companies, and capital markets names were especially weak on the rise in lending rates. In fixed income, 10-year Treasury yield had fallen to as low as 4.94% earlier today, though the lack of dissent in today's tightening and the Fed Chair's resolute stance in tackling inflation sent the yield on the benchmark note to 5.02%.The opening hours of the evening session are seeing some bounce in risk sentiment - S&P e-minis are up 0.3% and Nasdaq 100 futures are up 0.5%. In commodities, WTI crude oil is back below $102 per barrel, with precious metals falling in reflection of a sharp rise in US Dollar following the Fed announcement.Check out this evening's top movers from around Wall Street, compiled by The Fly.HIGHER -Generacup 33.9% after entering Amazon supply pact for backup power generatorsVicorup 9.8% after company announced licensing VPD to a leading AI OEMGFL Environmentalup 8.1% on Bloomberg report of possible bidding war by private equity consortiaVital Farmsup 4.7% after Axios reported the company is mauling strategic alternativesSunbelt Rentals Holdingsup 1.6% after Goldman Sachs upgrade to BuyNIKEup 0.8% after expanding board sizeDOWN AFTER EARNINGS -Lennardown 2.4%ALSO LOWER -Fluence Energydown 16.6% after FY26 revenue guidance cutHalozyme Therapeuticsdown 2.4% after convertible debt offering
Major Averages Decline for Second Day as Treasury Yields and Oil Prices Rise
The major averages moved lower for a second day in a row as Treasury yields and oil prices continue to climb. Treasury yields jumped after the U.S. Treasury Department said it will triple its buyback operation of longer-dated government debt to $6B.The renewed oil spike, meanwhile, is being driven by escalating fighting in the Middle East, including attacks involving Iran-backed Houthi militants and Saudi energy infrastructure. Brent has gained roughly 20% over the past month, raising concerns that an extended energy shock could feed directly into consumer inflation and complicate the Federal Reserve's policy decision next week.Get caught up quickly on the top news and calls moving stocks with these five Top Five lists.1.
