CFTC and NBA Sign MOU to Protect Basketball Market Integrity

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the National Basketball Association announced their signing of a Memorandum of Understanding intended to "protect the integrity of professional basketball in prediction markets." Through the MOU, the CFTC and NBA will "better share information by regularly communicating and discussing matters relating to integrity, as well as maintaining fair and transparent prediction markets," the league and agency stated. "I'm pleased the CFTC and NBA signed an MOU which continues the Commission's commitment to increasing data sharing between the agency and professional sports leagues. The NBA joins the MLB and NHL in taking a responsible step toward protecting sports integrity and market participants from abuses in prediction markets like insider trading and fraud. I thank NBA Commissioner Adam Silver for putting the integrity of professional basketball and America's financial markets first and for working with the CFTC on this MOU," said CFTC Chairman Michael Selig. New York Sues Polymarket for Illegal Gambling

New York Attorney General Letitia James and Governor Kathy Hochul announced a lawsuit against Polymarket announced "for running an illegal gambling operation" in New York through its prediction market platform. An investigation by the Office of the Attorney General found that Polymarket's prediction market "is an illegal, unlicensed gambling operation that exposes New Yorkers - including those under the legal gambling age of 21 - to serious personal and financial risk." The lawsuit is seeking a court order stopping Polymarket from operating as an "unlicensed" gambling business in New York state and requiring the company to pay fines, forfeit all illegal gains, and pay restitution to users.
