Treasury Yields Fall Back, S&P 500 Rebounds
Investors finally bought the dip in Treasuries, with the 10-year yield falling back to as low as 5.21% after the rate on the benchmark advanced as high as 5.34% this morning. Relief in fixed income also helped reverse the pressure in the equity space as the S&P 500 finished the day higher following three consecutive losing sessions. Energy and Tech were the best-performing sectors while Basic Materials underperformed. Within Tech, the pro-AI area of the market were especially strong - Micronended the day up 3% following last night's earnings and semiconductor equipment names like Lam Research, Applied Materials, and KLA Corpwere up 3% or more.Nikewas in the spotlight afterhours, with the stock falling over 8% on Q1 revenue miss and downbeat commentary from its incoming CFO. The company's challenges in China were especially telling as new CFO Denton warned that revenue is expected to get worse in the region for the rest of the year. Call for AI Slowdown Leads to Sharp Decline in Semiconductor Stocks
Following a blog post by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei this weekend calling for a slowdown in the pace of AI advancement, with the backing of that call by OpenAI's Sam Altman and Tesla's (TSLA) Elon Musk, shares of Semiconductors, Semi Equipment, Computer Hardware are down sharply in pre-market trading. In semi's, Marvell (MRVL) is down 7%, Intel (INTC) is down 6%, Micron (MU) and AMD (AMD) are down 5%, and Nvidia (NVDA) shares are off by 2%. Among Computer Hardware components within S&P 500, Seagate (STX) and Sandisk (SNDK) are down 6%, with Super Micro (SMCI) and Western Digital (WDC) down over 5%. Semiconductor Equipment stocks are similarly seeing broadbased declines - Lam Research (LRCX) is off by 8%, while KLA Corp (KLAC), Applied Materials (AMAT), and Teradyne (TER) are down 7%. Some of the largest ETFs in Semiconductor space - SMH and SOXX - are down about 5%. Conversely, shares of cybersecurity companies are rising on expectations of stronger demand due to AI risks - Palo Alto Networks (PANW) and Crowdstrike (CRWD) are up 5% in pre-market trade.

Notable gainers among liquid option names this morning include KLA-Tencor (KLAC) $183.78 +10.84, Coherent (COHR) $280.62 +16.21, Sandisk Corporation (SNDK) $1646.70 +91.71, Teradyne (TER) $356.67 +18.22, and Seagate (STX) $841.10 +42.49.
Major US Indices Close Lower, Semiconductor Stocks Plummet
All major US indices finished the day at the lows and even a less hawkish than feared FOMC decision failed to backstop the AI capex trade gone awry. Tech and Industrials were the worst performing sectors in the S&P500 as Semiconductors, Semi Equipment, and Hardware names continued to unravel with massive drawdowns. Micronfell another 10% while KLA Corp- which reported results overnight - was down 11%. Among notable Industrials, Lennox Internationalfell over 20% despite a Q2 earnings beat as its management cut earnings guidance for the year. The sparse positive column once again featured Consumer Staples, with Walmartnow having risen for 4 consecutive sessions.In the opening hour of the evening session, equity futures are modestly higher - S&P e-minis are up 0.4%, Nasdaq 100 is up 0.6%, and Dow Industrials are up 0.3%. Consumer Defensive and Healthcare Sectors Perform Strongly This Week
Counter-cyclical Consumer Defensive and Healthcare sectors have been by far the best performing areas of the market this week, and that was once again the case today as investors continue to rotate from "AI-on" into "AI-off" themes. In addition to Packaging, Beverage, Tobacco, and other Staples, Software and IT Services names were particularly strong - IBMbounced 5% and has now gained 10% from its post-pre-announcement lows while Workdayand ServiceNow- software stocks routinely punished for being especially threatened in being made "obsolete" by AI - were up 8% and 5%. In turn, Semiconductors, Memory, Hardware and Equipment stocks were all hard-hit yet again - Micronfell 9%, Sandiskwas down 14%, and Western Digitalslipped 7% in Tuesday's trading.In the opening hour of the evening session, sentiment remains at the whims of heightened headline risk, with S&P e-minis contract flat and Nasdaq 100 trading down by 0.2%. KLA Corp- the largest technology market cap out with results afterhours - fell 9% despite beating on top and bottom lines as traders noted compressing margins. Seagatewas also volatile, having pared its gains to trade slightly negative after jumping as high as 7% initially on earnings before recovering for a 6% advance into the end of the afterhours session. Geopolitical concerns were also "front and center" Tuesday evening - WTI crude oil spiked over 4% above $82.50 per barrel after U.S. CentCom reported that Iran has launched a missile strike on a U.S. base in Jordan.
