Fed Holds Rates Steady, Tech Stocks Perform Strongly
Major indices finished the day marginally higher after the Federal Reserve left the Fed Funds rate unchanged as expected in a 10-2 vote and Fed Chair Warsh struck a mixed tone, noting that while uncertainty remains elevated in part due to "geopolitical developments," domestic spending has been "resilient." Technology was by far the best-performing sector on Wednesday, bolstered by memory and semiconductor names in the wake of better-than-expected results from SK Hynixalong with a constructive investor day update from Oracle.Markets are set for a much more rocky Thursday however following significant post-earnings weakness from Alphabetand Fortinet. Google parent was down nearly 10% below $295 per share - the lowest levels since April - after worse-than-expected Q3 earnings and a maintained capex outlook. Fortinet reports better than expected earnings, but weaker than expected Service Revenue was cited as a cause of a slide in the stock of over 20%, also weighing on other cybersecurity names. Microsofthit record highs and extended sessions above $565 per share after its set of results, but retreated to $540 during the earnings call that reduced capex outlook and hinted at looking for "additional sources of funding".Index futures are lower following the spate of Tech earnings news, with S&P e-Minis down 0.4% and Nasdaq 100 contract down 1.1%.Check out this evening's top movers from around Wall Street, compiled by The Fly.HIGHER AFTER EARNINGS -Glaukosup 17.7%Teladoc Healthup 8.9%Carvanaup 8.4%Chipotle Mexican Grillup 6.9%Cohuup 6.5%Gen Digitalup 5.9%eBayup 4.1%KLA Corporationup 4.1%O'Reilly Automotiveup 3.7%Microsoftup 2.5%ALSO HIGHER -Lumentumup 8.9% after Bloomberg report of takeover interest from Marvell, which is down 7.5%.DOWN AFTER EARNINGS -Fortinetdown 25.7%Sprouts Farmers Marketdown 21.8%ServiceNowdown 17.4%Alphabetdown 9.6%Tyler Technologiesdown 6.3%FormFactordown 5.3%FedExdown 2.3%Ford Motordown 1.1%
Nasdaq Falls 0.4%, WTI Crude Rises to $93
Escalating geopolitical tensions and a more wobbly AI trade was the story of the day on Monday, with Tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite following 0.4% and S&P 500 finishing the day down by a decimal.WTI crude oil was up for the third consecutive day, rising above $93 per barrel as attack on a Saudi airport by Iran-backed Houthi militia - followed by a strong rebuke of the strike from the White House - threatened to draw the US into the Saudi-Yemen conflict and further destabilize the Middle East. Energy was the best-performing sector in the S&P 500, followed closely by Consumer Staples stocks.Technology was the worst performing area of the market, as the basket of stocks most closely associated with the AI buildout drove the retreat. Major US Indices Close Lower, Semiconductor Stocks Plummet
All major US indices finished the day at the lows and even a less hawkish than feared FOMC decision failed to backstop the AI capex trade gone awry. Tech and Industrials were the worst performing sectors in the S&P500 as Semiconductors, Semi Equipment, and Hardware names continued to unravel with massive drawdowns. Micronfell another 10% while KLA Corp- which reported results overnight - was down 11%. Among notable Industrials, Lennox Internationalfell over 20% despite a Q2 earnings beat as its management cut earnings guidance for the year. The sparse positive column once again featured Consumer Staples, with Walmartnow having risen for 4 consecutive sessions. In the opening hour of the evening session, equity futures are modestly higher - S&P e-minis are up 0.4%, Nasdaq 100 is up 0.6%, and Dow Industrials are up 0.3%. Investors are still digesting today's FOMC decision to keep rates intact with mostly unchanged accompanying statement while also watching diverging price action from Microsoftand Metaafter their earnings reports and updates on spending plans.Check out this evening's top movers from around Wall Street, compiled by The Fly.HIGHER AFTER EARNINGSSilicon Motion Technologyup 10.6%Fortinetup 10.5%FormFactorup 10.4%Glaukosup 8.7%Microsoftup 8.6%Lam Researchup 6.1%Chipotle Mexican Grillup 5.9%GFL Environmentalup 5.7%Pitney Bowesup 5.2%Starbucksup 4.9%Everforthup 4.7%ALSO HIGHERFive9up 7.1% after admission into S&P SmallCap 600 indexDOWN AFTER EARNINGSFair Isaacdown 9.3%Carvanadown 7.7%Houlihan Lokeydown 6.9%Meta Platformsdown 6.5%Arm Holdingsdown 6.1%Align Technologydown 6.1%QUALCOMMdown 3.6%Robinhood Marketsdown 1.0%
