Major Averages Broadly Lower Near Noon
The major averages were broadly lower near noon as investors continue to balance easing inflation pressures and strong corporate earnings against renewed geopolitical risks. The inflation backdrop remains supportive for equities. July CPI and PPI both came in softer than expected, reducing concerns that the Federal Reserve will need to raise interest rates at its September meeting. PPI was unchanged in July after declining 0.1% in June, while the latest CPI data showed inflation continuing to moderate. The market is increasingly focused on whether the combination of cooling inflation and a weakening labor market will give the Fed room to ease policy later this year.Get caught up quickly on the top news and calls moving stocks with these five Top Five lists.1. S&P 500 Rises as Oil Prices Fall
The major averages closed broadly higher as oil prices fell and investors digested softer-than-feared inflation data and another slate of corporate earnings reports. Communication services was the best-performing sector in the benchmark index, bolstered by 5% gains out of Netflixas well as strong performance by Telecom Services names. Basic Materials names underperformed however as metals prices continued their range-bound trading in spite of benign inflation data this week. The Fed outlook has become somewhat more favorable for equities following the inflation data and the weak July employment report. Meanwhile, oil prices were down as concerns over global demand and rising U.S. crude inventories offset continued geopolitical risks surrounding Iran and the Strait of Hormuz. In the opening hour of the evening session, S&P 500 e-Minis, Dow Industrials, and Nasdaq 100 futures are trading flat. In commodities, WTI crude oil is just above $81 a barrel.Check out this evening's top movers from around Wall Street, compiled by The Fly.HIGHER AFTER EARNINGS -Eton Pharmaceuticalsup 20.4%Heartflow.up 17.7%Nu Holdingsup 7.5%AudioEye, Inc.up 2.6%ALSO HIGHER -Redditup 11.1% on S&P 500 inclusionDOWN AFTER EARNINGS -Intellicheck, Inc.down 17.9%ARS Pharmaceuticalsdown 13.4%Globant S.A.down 12.7%Applied Materialsdown 4.9%HawkEye 360down 2.8%ALSO LOWER -Birkenstock Holding plcdown 4.4% after equity offering
