ViaSat Successfully Launches Maxwell Spacecraft, Advancing NASA Communications Services Project
ViaSat (VSAT) announced it has advanced the company's demonstration mission for NASA's Communications Services Project with the successful launch of the Maxwell spacecraft from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on October 20 during the Bandwagon-5 rideshare mission with SpaceX (SPCX). This on-orbit demonstration mission is a key milestone in Viasat's work developing innovative space-based communication services under two Communications Services Project contract awards totaling $81M. Viasat's government space team will now proceed with on-orbit testing and demonstrations that will take place over five months through March 2027. Rocket Lab (RKLB) built the Maxwell spacecraft at its Long Beach, California, facility. "Yesterday's launch represents the culmination of years of innovation, engineering and collaboration across Viasat, NASA and our industry partners," said John Reeves, vice president of space and mission systems at Viasat.
Viasat Awarded USMC Contract with Initial Order of $42M
Viasat announced it was awarded, through its subsidiary Inmarsat Government, the Marine Enterprise Commercial Satcom Satellite Services, MECS2, contract from the U.S. Space Force Commercial Satellite Communications Office, CSCO. Viasat has received an initial $42M task order award under what is a seven-year, up to $307M ceiling Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity, IDIQ, contract through which Viasat will provide fully managed, end-to-end global satellite services for the United States Marine Corps, USMC.
ViaSat-3 F2 Satellite Enters Service in Americas, Offering Over 1Tbps Network Capacity
ViaSat announced its ViaSat-3 F2 satellite has entered service across the Americas, significantly expanding the company's network capacity, flexibility, and resilience across the region. ViaSat-3 F2 is designed to provide more than one terabit per second of throughput capacity over the Americas. The satellite's advanced beamforming technology dynamically allocates capacity to high-demand flight routes, shipping lanes, and geographic regions. With ViaSat-3 F1 already in service and F3 entering service across Asia-Pacific in August, completion of the ViaSat-3 constellation has tripled the bandwidth available across Viasat's global fleet. "With the VS3 constellation now fully operational, we have substantially expanded our ability to deliver high-quality connectivity where demand is growing fastest and introduced new forms of resilience for our government and commercial customers," said Mark Dankberg, chairman and CEO of ViaSat
Space42 and Viasat Sign Agreement to Establish Equatys
Space42 and Viasat announced the signing of an agreement at World Space Business Week in Paris to formally establish Equatys, a shared space and ground infrastructure platform that will support the extension of mobile coverage and overlay in the places terrestrial networks cannot serve, including in coverage gaps in populated metro areas. Upon the formation of Equatys, Space42 and Viasat will commit to an initial equity contribution of up to $1B. Development of the initial constellation accelerates with the simultaneous signing of an agreement to step-up joint funding. Upon formation of Equatys, Viasat is expected to be appointed as the company's prime technology contractor. Equatys is designed to support the connection of smartphones, IoT devices, and other devices and terminals directly to satellites, giving mobile operators a way to offer voice, text, and data where cellular networks are otherwise unavailable or have low density. The company's funding is expected to come from a combination of founders' equity, third-party equity and debt financing sources.
ViaSat-3 F3 Satellite Enters Service, Unlocking New Opportunities in Asia-Pacific
ViaSat announced that its ViaSat-3 F3 satellite has entered service, with capacity now available for customers operating across fast-growing markets in the Asia-Pacific region. The milestone marks the beginning of revenue-generating operations for one of the most advanced high throughput communications satellites ever deployed. ViaSat-3 F3 is expected to deliver greater flexibility, coverage, and capacity with competitive bandwidth economics driving new growth opportunities across ViaSat's markets. ViaSat-3 F3 is designed to deliver more than one terabit per second of throughput capacity and is the second of three satellites in ViaSat's next-generation Ka-band constellation. This enhanced capacity will allow the company to pursue growth opportunities in underpenetrated attractive markets. With ViaSat-3 F1 in service since 2024, ViaSat-3 F3's service entry brings the company's next-generation ViaSat-3 fleet to two high throughput satellites. ViaSat-3 F2, which will serve the Americas, is in the final stages of in-orbit testing and expected to enter service soon, at which point the company's next-generation constellation will be complete.
