AMD and Anthropic Sign AI Server Agreement Worth Tens of Billions

Under the terms of the deal, Anthropic will buy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD's latest-generation chips - the Instinct MI450 - starting in the first half of 2027, with AMD also set to invest up to $5B in Anthropic.AI LICENSING DEAL:More online media companies are expressing frustration with Googleas siphons off search traffic and upends revenue models, Alexandra Bruell of The Wall Street Journal. Reddithas discussed shutting Google's access to its content for AI use, people familiar with the matter told the Journal. Meanwhile, USA Todayis debating on blocking Google's crawler to prevent its content from being used in its AI summaries. Additionally, Politico, the Economist, People and Reuters are each debating on how, or if, they will continue to work with Google.DA Davidson keeps a Buy rating on Reddit after a $200 price target following the news report. Reddit's contract with Google is up for renewal in the first half of 2027 and currently represents $60M per year, or less than 2% of consensus 2026 revenue estimates. DA says this change represents a risk for Reddit's overall daily active user growth in the coming quarters, and particularly logged-out users. However, "we don't want to jump the gun and make the assumption," the firm adds. It thinks both companies will try to devise a way to continue driving referral traffic while also allowing Google AI search to provide helpful information.HEALTH, CONSTRUCTION RESEARCH:Assistant to the President and Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Michael Kratsios published a newto President Trump that charts a course to revitalize American research and development. Scientists will have access to the Department of Energy's supercomputers, AI and specialized datasets, along with other components needed to run experiments using algorithms, said Michael Kratsios, chief technology adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump, in an interview with Reuters. Fifteen federal agencies will be involved in the project, including the Departments of Health and Human Services, Energy, Transportation, Defense and Interior. "The White House is helping bring together all of the different agencies that work on different domains to make them part of this larger effort on AI for science," Kratsios said. The Trump administration also plans to overhaul how the U.S. government funds federal research by supporting more individual scientists and the use of AI, rather than universities, according to a White House report.NEW AI MODELS:OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman is planning to discuss the upcoming generation of AI models with the Trump administration and U.S. lawmakers as the U.S. works to create a process to review the safety of AI systems, Maggie Eastland of Bloomberg, citing a senior company executive. According to Chris Lehane, OpenAI's head of global public affairs, Altman's visit comes as U.S. officials develop a framework for safety reviews.AI ENERGY USE:The biggest utilities and data center developers in the U.S. have signed on to President Trump's pledge to pay more for the energy required to run large-language models, hoping to assuage concerns over energy use amid the AI boom, the Wall Street Journal's Meridith McGraw and Amrith Ramkumar. NextEra Energy, Duke Energy, Equinix, and Digital Realtyare among the nearly 200 companies committing to the pledge aimed at ensuring AI energy consumption doesn't increase electric bills for consumers across the country, the authors say, citing a White House list of signatories obtained by The Wall Street Journal.NUCLEAR REACTORS FOR AI:Okloand X-Energyare joining Microsoft, Nvidia, and other partners in a Trump administration-backed $200M initiative to accelerate deployment of advanced nuclear power for AI data centers, with national laboratories and universities also participating in the effort, Bloomberg's Naureen S. Malik and Ari Natter. Details of the effort could be announced as soon as Wednesday at an AI energy summit convened by the U.S. Department of Energy, according to the report.NVIDIA BLACKWELL B300:QumulusAIannounced a two-year, take-or-pay agreement to supply NvidiaBlackwell B300 nodes to a GPU cloud marketplace used by AI teams across more than 100 regions worldwide. The contract, valued at more than $18M, makes QumulusAI a core Blackwell supplier to the customer. Capacity under the agreement will be served from QumulusAI's active U.S. data center footprint, with initial deployments expected to come online this summer. The company's demand-led deployment model places capacity into available pockets of power across a distributed network of colocation sites, enabling it to bring GPU capacity online in months, not years. The agreement adds a two-year, take-or-pay commitment of more than $18M to the company's book of business.AI UNIT JOBS:Amazonhas cut jobs in parts of its artificial general intelligence organization as it continues investing heavily in AI, reflecting ongoing workforce realignment across the technology sector, The Wall Street Journal's Anvee Bhutani. It is unclear how many employees have been affected by the job cuts. "We've been building large AI models for several years, and it remains one of the most important things we're working on," an Amazon spokesperson said. "This is a fast-moving space, and we're sharpening our focus on the initiatives that matter most for customers, so we can move faster on what counts." The spokesperson said the increased focus led to "some difficult decisions, including eliminating some roles within parts of our AGI organization."BUY COREWEAVE:Truist upgraded CoreWeaveto Buy from Hold with a price target of $126, down from $131. As more enterprises move toward open models and sovereign AI, the firm believes demand for compute will only increase, benefiting CoreWeave, though shares trade at a significant discount to neoclouds despite the company's "leadership position," the firm tells investors. Shares have declined 42% since Q1 of 2026, notes Truist, which views Meta'sentry into the space as a risk, but believes Meta will maintain its existing contracts and terms. However, if Meta does not renew, the firm expects other enterprises to absorb the computing capacity, the firm added.
