Starbucks (SBUX) is currently priced at $100.80, with a forward P/E of 30.86, which suggests that the stock is trading at a premium compared to its earnings potential. The RSI is at 71.53, indicating that the stock may be overbought in the short term. While the company has shown strong revenue growth with a 20.04% year-to-date change, the recent insider selling trend of 406.25% raises concerns about insider confidence. Therefore, it may be wise to hold off on buying at this price and wait for a better entry point, especially given the upcoming earnings report on October 29, 2026, which could further impact the stock's performance.

A cup of Americano no longer covers an afternoon. We tend to assume that when a shop starts counting seats, it's usually because times are tough. So when Starbucks China required customers to make a purchase to sit down, many people's first reaction was that the economy is struggling—even coffee shops are starting to shoo people away. In fact, the same rule has been in place in North America for 1 year and 9 months. Starting January 27, 2025, seating and restrooms in Starbucks company-operated stores in the US and Canada are reserved for customers only, and those who violate the rule will be asked to leave. This effectively reverses a 2018 commitment—that year, two Black men at a Philadelphia store were sitting without ordering while waiting for a friend and were reported to police and led away, after which Starbucks announced it would open its doors to everyone. When a company swings back and forth on the same issue, the reason is rarely how good or bad the economy was in any given year. It has been testing all along just how much of a seat should be given away for free. On October 22, this rule arrived in China. On the very first day, a customer in Shanghai was reminded to order 5 times within 1.5 hours (CNR). That said, customer service also noted this is only a recommendation, not mandatory. In North America they can ask people to leave; in China it stays at reminders—the firmness is actually very different. Chinese stores of course have their own books to balance: average spend per customer is still falling, new shareholder Boyu holds 60%, and outside the door there are still 36,087 Luckin stores. This is a company recalculating its accounts—it has little to do with how warm or cold a country's economy is. Many people have spent afternoons like this in coffee shops—one Americano, one power outlet, never feeling they were taking advantage of anyone. Looking back now, that table was always included in the price of the coffee; it's just that no one used to lay out the bill. Seats have always had a price. We were just 1 year and 9 months late in seeing this bill.
