Planet Labs Awarded NASA Evaluation Task Order
Planet Labs PBC has been awarded an evaluation task order under NASA's Commercial Satellite Data Acquisition, CSDA, program. Under the agreement, NASA will evaluate Planet's high-resolution Tanager hyperspectral dataset to assess its quality, reliability, and utility for supporting the agency's Earth science goals.
SES Space & Defense Launches Demonstration Payload on Planet Labs Satellite
SES Space & Defense launched a demonstration payload aboard Planet Labs PBC's Pelican-12 satellite, in support of NASA's Communications Services Project. The launch took place today, October 20, 2026, at 7:04 a.m. ET aboard the Bandwagon-5 rideshare mission with SpaceX from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. NASA announced it will gradually sunset its Tracking and Data Relay Satellite fleet and acquire commercial space relay services for future science missions in low Earth orbit. In 2022, NASA's Space Communications and Navigation division awarded $278.5M to industry through the Communications Services Project to fund development and demonstration of space relay services. SES Space & Defense has demonstrated LEO Relay Service on both geosynchronous and O3b mPOWER medium Earth orbit data relay systems on orbit to provide low and high data rate services for mission backhaul and spacecraft state of health. The demonstration will continue to expand commercial service capability with the use of the Pelican satellite.
Planet Labs Successfully Launches Pelican-12 Satellite
Planet Labs announced the successful launch of Pelican-12, an updated second generation high resolution Pelican satellite. Pelican-12 was launched to orbit aboard the Bandwagon-5 rideshare mission with SpaceX from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Planet has successfully made initial contact with the satellite and has begun the process to commission the satellite and lower its orbital altitude. This successful mission marks Planet's 25th satellite sent to orbit in 2026, across four launches.
Planet Labs Subsidiary Selected by ESA to Build Slovenia Space Resilience Node
Planet Labs announced Planet's subsidiary Sinergise Solutions d.o.o. has been selected by the European Space Agency, ESA, to build the Slovenia Space Resilience Node, SRN. Running under ESA's European Resilience from Space Earth Observation program under Element 2, the 12-month pilot project will develop a prototype that automates the link between wide-area satellite change detection and high-resolution imaging tasking for Slovenia's Administration for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief within the Ministry of Defence.
Planet Labs Successfully Launches 20 Satellites
Planet Labs "announced the successful launch of 20 satellites: the first demo mission for Google's Project Suncatcher; Tanager-2, its latest hyperspectral satellite; and 18 SuperDoves. The spacecraft were launched to orbit aboard the Transporter-18 rideshare mission with SpaceX from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Planet has successfully made initial contact with Tanager-2, the Project Suncatcher prototype, and two SuperDoves and begun the commissioning process. Planet expects to make contact with the remaining 16 SuperDoves that will deploy on the D-Orbit ION orbital transfer vehicle on schedule. This marks Planet's 40th successful launch and a total of 718 satellites built and delivered on orbit. Developed in partnership with Google, the Project Suncatcher satellite will run the first-ever test of Google's Tensor Processing Units in space. The moonshot project is exploring the feasibility of running machine learning (ML) compute systems in-orbit."
