Caspian and Kura Plan to Outline Development Strategy for KO-7246
Caspian Therapeutics and Kura Oncology announced that they plan to outline the development strategy for KO-7246, Caspian's selective, oral menin inhibitor designed for diabetes and other chronic metabolic diseases in a webcast October 13. Kura launched Caspian in September with a $50M financing led by BVF Partners with participation from T1D Fund, Invus, Montanova, Eli Lilly, Kura Oncology, members of Kura's leadership team, and several successful biotech entrepreneurs. Proceeds from the financing are expected to support KO-7246 through initial clinical proof of concept and advancement of a second menin inhibitor candidate. Kura contributed KO-7246 and related intellectual property and know-how to Caspian and retains approximately half ownership of the company. KO-7246 increased insulin levels and expanded insulin-producing cells in a mouse model of Type 2 diabetes. Combined with semaglutide, it produced a rapid initial reduction in blood sugar and a sustained effect. No hypoglycemia was observed in KO-7246-treated mice, including those receiving the combination. In a rat model of severe insulin deficiency, responding animals regained normal blood sugar control. Glucose control and elevated stimulated C-peptide, a marker of endogenous insulin production, persisted for one month after treatment withdrawal. KO-7246 stimulated beta cell proliferation in human islet microtissue samples from multiple donors without increasing proliferation of other cell types. Caspian is advancing KO-7246 through IND-enabling development and intends to conduct a Phase 1 proof-of-concept study in patients with diabetes.
Caspian Therapeutics Releases Preclinical Data Supporting KO-7246 as Potential Best-in-Class Drug
Caspian Therapeutics announced comprehensive preclinical data supporting KO-7246 as a potential best-in-class menin inhibitor for diabetes. KO-7246 regenerated functional beta-cell mass, demonstrated durable glycemic control, and increased endogenous insulin production in preclinical models of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. In human islets, KO-7246 selectively increased beta-cell proliferation and improved glucose-responsive insulin secretion. Together, the findings establish a differentiated preclinical profile including validated activity as a menin inhibitor, durable disease-relevant activity, and confirmed translation to a human-islet setting. The data were generated by Kura Oncology prior to the launch of Caspian in September. KO-7246 regenerated functional beta-cell mass and produced durable glycemic control in Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes models. KO-7246 has potential to complement existing diabetes therapies with a novel mechanism of action, evidenced by post-treatment durability and combination benefit with semaglutide. Findings highlight a potentially disease-modifying approach designed to restore the body's own endogenous insulin-producing capacity
Kura Launches Caspian Therapeutics, Retains 50% Ownership
H.C. Wainwright notes Kura has announced the launch of Caspian Therapeutics, a newly formed, independently financed company focused on advancing menin inhibition as a potential disease-modifying approach for diabetes and cardiometabolic diseases. Importantly, Kura will retain approximately 50% ownership of Caspian on a fully diluted basis and board representation, providing continued exposure to the potential value of KO-7246 while transferring the capital and operational burden of developing the asset to a separately financed entity. In the firm's view, the transaction also represents a meaningful strategic simplification for Kura, which can now fully direct resources toward its oncology pipeline while maintaining substantial economic participation in the potential success of its former metabolic program. Wainwright has a Buy rating on Kura with a price target of $40 on the shares.
Kura Oncology Launches Caspian Therapeutics with $50M Financing
Kura Oncology announced the launch of Caspian Therapeutics, a separately financed company established to advance small-molecule menin inhibitors for diabetes and cardiometabolic diseases. Caspian has completed a $50M financing led by BVF Partners. Caspian was established around KO-7246, a next-generation, highly selective menin inhibitor purpose-designed for chronic metabolic diseases, together with related intellectual property and know-how contributed by Kura. The financing is expected to fund advancement of KO-7246 through IND-enabling development and initial clinical proof-of-concept in diabetes, as well as support the advancement of a second menin inhibitor development candidate for diabetes and cardiometabolic diseases. Caspian will operate with dedicated leadership and external capital with access to Kura's research, development, and corporate capabilities under an intercompany services arrangement. Kura will retain approximately half ownership of Caspian and board representation.
Kura Oncology Appoints Jennifer Fulk as CFO
Kura Oncology (KURA) announced the appointment of Jennifer Fulk as CFO, effective September 8. Fulk will join Kura's senior leadership team and report to Troy Wilson, president, CEO and chairman of the board. Most recently, Fulk served as CFO of Soleno Therapeutics (SLNO).
