Electronic Arts Cuts 400 Jobs, Shuts Down BioWare

In a letter to staff, Electronic Arts said it will slash around 400 jobs, or roughly 3% of its total workforce, and shut down "Mass Effect" developer BioWare, which it acquired in 2007, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reports, citing a person familiar with the company's plans. In the letter, EA COO David Tinson and chief studios officer Cam Weber wrote that "over the past several months, we've taken a hard look at our business" and will cancel certain projects, including BioWare's next "Mass Effect" game, which had been in early development, the author notes. The game maker still intends to invest in its sports titles, online shooter "Apex Legends," "Battlefield," and action-adventure games such as the next "Star Wars Jedi" game and a new title based on Marvel's Iron Man, the author says. Publicly traded companies in the space include Microsoft (MSFT), Sony (SONY), GameStop (GME), NetEase (NTES), Nintendo (NTDOY), Take-Two (TTWO), Tencent (TCEHY) and Ubisoft (UBSFY).

Epic Games Launches New Launcher with Linux Support

Epic Games said it "vibe coded" a new Epic Games Launcher that's faster and more responsive than the current one, and has a new look. "This first release is light on features," the company said in a blog post. "Think of it as a speedboat and not a yacht! Though it does have advanced digital commerce technology such as a shopping cart. You can start testing the new Epic Games Launcher in Preview for Windows, macOS, and, for the first time, Linux." Additionally, the company said it is bringing "Fortnite" to Linux, and in doing so is rebuilding Easy Anti-Cheat and working with distro maintainers on security requirements. Once it's working with a critical mass of distro maintainers, we'll bring Fortnite to Linux via the Epic Games Launcher. Investors in Epic include Tencent (TCEHY), KKR (KKR), Disney (DIS), and Sony (SONY). The Fly notes that "vibe coding" is a software development practices aided by generative artificial intelligence.
