Under Armour Short Interest Rises to 27.7%

Welcome to this week's installment of "The Short Interest Report" - The Fly's weekly recap of short interest trends among some of the most widely followed high-short-float stocks. Using the data from our partner, which utilizes the latest information from stock lenders to estimate short interest changes for thousands of publicly traded companies, this report will screen for some of biggest changes in short interest as a percentage of free float and days-to-cover ratios while also considering the short interest data on some of the more volatile and heavier-traded names of the week. Based on the availability of data from Ortex, the report tracks the trading period that covers prior Friday through Thursday of this week, excluding holidays. As a basis of comparison for stocks discussed below, the S&P 500 index was up 1.2%, the Nasdaq Composite was up 1.8%, the Russell 2000 index was up 0.7%, the Russell 2000 Growth ETFwas up 1.1% and the Russell 2000 Value ETFwas up 0.4% in the five-day trading session range through August 27.SHORT INTEREST GAINERSOrtex-reported short interest in Under Armourhad come in from the 32% level seen in the final week of July to a trough of about 24% on August 12 as the stock had fallen about 30% in that time span, with the bulk of the move lower coming after the company's Q1 results and a FY27 revenue guidance cut. With shares seemingly having found a bottom around $5, short positioning was also stabilizing through the middle weeks of the month, though this week's downbeat results from Dick's Sportingreawakened the bearish narrative. Short interest as a percentage of free float rose from 24.3% to 27.7% even though the stock was down another 4.3% in the five-day period covered. Following last month's swoon and with pressure building in athletic footwear, year-to-date, Under Armour is now up just 2%, though the stock is still vastly outperforming Nike's38% 2026 decline.Ortex-reported short interest in HighPeak Energyhad been tracking higher since the short positioning troughed around 28% in the first week of July, though this week, bearish appetite has accelerated more sharply. In the five-day period covered through Thursday, short interest as a percentage of free float spiked from 33.8% to 42.4%, matching the all-time high on June 5. With trading volume in the stock receding, the increase in days-to-cover was even more dramatic, rising from 12.7 to a 17-month high of 16.9. The stock was down 3.7% this week, but has rallied over 70% year to date, and while shares had initially moved higher when the company reported Q2 results on August 10th, the lack of a follow-through and the outsized gains this year have ostensibly reignited the bearish resolve.Ortex-reported short interest in Sweetgreenhad been moving on a downward trajectory since mid-July, when reports suggesting that the culpability behind this summer's outbreak of parasitic illness was with Taylor Farms had seemingly absolved the company. Sentiment on the stock then bottomed on August 7 when the company reported a miss in its Q2 results and cut FY26 guidance, as traders bought the dip while shorts covered their position following the "deck-clearing" reset. With the stock having risen over 40% from its post-earnings low in just a two-week period however, bearish appetite has also resurfaced. This week, short interest as a percentage of free float jumped from 19.3% to 22.5%, the highest level since the first week of May, while days to cover on the name rose from 3.4 to 4.1. Shares of Sweetgreen were up 3.2% in the five-day period covered, returning to levels seen at the start of 2026.SHORT INTEREST DECLINERSOrtex-reported short interest in Applied Digitalhad been tracking sideways in 26.5% to 31% range, since the last week of May, though with the stock down about 50% over that time-span, bears saw this week's four-week low in the stock price as an opportunity to lighten their exposure. Short interest as a percent of free float on the name was down sharply from 29.5% to 22.2% - the lowest level since late 2024. Days to cover on the data center operator also slipped from 3.9 to 3.0 – a five-month low. The stock price, meanwhile, was down about 4% in the 5-day period covered, and inclusive of Friday's additional 7.7% decline, shares of Applied Digital are now up just 3% for the year.
