Sana Biotechnology Releases UP421 Study Data
Sana Biotechnology announced that The New England Journal of Medicine has published a peer-reviewed letter to the editor by clinicians at Uppsala University Hospital highlighting 14-month follow-up data from an investigator-sponsored study of UP421, an allogeneic primary human pancreatic islet cell therapy engineered with Sana's hypoimmune platform technology, showing that the transplantation of HIP-modified insulin-secreting cells has the potential to treat type 1 diabetes without the use of immunosuppressants. "We continue to be encouraged by these results, which demonstrate the promise of our HIP-modified cells and their potential as a significant medical breakthrough for people living with type 1 diabetes. The recognition by the NEJM of the importance of these longer-term follow-up data is notable. As we advance SC451 toward a Phase 1/2 study, we are inspired by the opportunity to move beyond lifelong disease management and toward restoring natural glucose control. Our goal is to make a one-time, functional cure without the need for immunosuppression for individuals living with type 1 diabetes," said Gary Meininger, Sana's executive VP, chief medical officer.
Sana Biotechnology Presents Preclinical Data on SG293 CAR T Cell Therapy
Sana Biotechnology announced the presentation of preclinical data demonstrating that a surrogate SG293, an in vivo CAR T cell therapy, achieved cell-specific delivery, robust and dose-dependent CAR T cell generation, and deep B cell depletion in non-human primates without the use of lymphodepleting chemotherapy. "SG293 represents a differentiated in vivo CAR T cell approach designed to work without lymphodepletion to deliver potent therapeutic activity and exceptional specificity to minimize off-target effects," said Dhaval Patel, executive VP, chief scientific officer.
Steve Harr: Cash Decreases to $101.1M in 2026
Cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities as of March 31, 2026 were $101.1M compared to $138.4M as of December 31, 2025. The decrease of $37.3M was primarily driven by cash used in operations of $37.4M. "We remain focused on execution in 2026 and are on track with both SC451 and SG293," said Steve Harr, CEO. "We are working to file our IND and begin a Phase 1 trial later this year for SC451, our gene-modified, stem cell-derived pancreatic islet cell product candidate designed for patients with type 1 diabetes with the goal of a single treatment leading to long-term normal blood glucose without the need for any insulin therapy or immunosuppression. We are pleased to have recently entered into a strategic collaboration with Mayo Clinic, whose multidisciplinary expertise we expect will help accelerate the development, standardization of delivery for, and access to SC451. We also continue to advance SG293, our in vivo CAR T cell product candidate, which has the potential to offer a one-time, off-the-shelf treatment without conditioning chemotherapy to patients with blood cancers or B cell-mediated autoimmune disorders. We are making meaningful progress toward our goal of beginning clinical testing later this year. We are also preparing to begin a clinical trial for SG227, an in vivo BCMA-targeted CAR T cell therapy, by as early as mid-2027 assuming positive early safety and efficacy data for SG293. This near-term operational focus has the potential to generate meaningful proof of concept data across multiple programs over the coming 12-18 months, and we look forward to building on this momentum."
Sana Biotechnology Partners with Mayo Clinic to Advance SC451 Development
Sana Biotechnology and Mayo Clinic announced a strategic collaboration to advance development of SC451, Sana's investigational hypoimmune-modified pancreatic islet cell therapy for type 1 diabetes. SC451 is designed to allow a single administration of pancreatic islet cells to support long-term glucose control without the need for ongoing insulin therapy or immunosuppression for patients with type 1 diabetes. The collaboration will draw on Mayo Clinic's multidisciplinary expertise to accelerate the development, validation, and standardization of protocols and processes for SC451, supporting safe, scalable, and consistent delivery across diverse clinical environments.
