Stocks Decline as U.S. 10-Year Treasury Yield Hits 5%
Stocks closed lower after the yield on the U.S. 10-year Treasury note rose for a fifth consecutive session, hitting the closely watched 5% threshold for the first time since 2007. The yield climbed as high as 5.04% before easing slightly to 5.01%. The renewed rise in oil prices continues to cloud the inflation outlook, particularly as tensions in the Middle East remain elevated and risks to oil supplies increase. The Fed is widely expected to raise interest rates for the first time since 2023 on Wednesday and investors will also closely scrutinize the Fed's updated economic projections, particularly its outlook for inflation and rates.Get caught up quickly on the top news and calls moving stocks with these five Top Five lists.1. Stocks Decline as Bond Yields Rise
Stocks were lower on Tuesday, extending the pullback from the previous session on further pressure from higher bond yields. Long-maturity yields rose further as the escalation of strikes in the Middle East worsened the outlook on energy supply from the region, magnifying inflation risks and a hawkish response from the Federal Reserve. Market participants widely expect the Fed to hike rates by 25 basis points tomorrow as higher fuel prices have driven traction in underlying inflation.Get caught up quickly on the top news and calls moving stocks with these five Top Five lists.1. Stock Futures Lower Ahead of Fed Policy Meeting
Stock futures are pointing to another lower open as investors brace for the Federal Reserve to begin its two-day policy meeting, with the central bank widely expected to raise interest rates for the first time since 2023. The 10-year Treasury yield has climbed above 5% for the first time since 2007, reaching about 5.04%, as investors contend with renewed inflation concerns, elevated government borrowing and the prospect of tighter monetary policy.Oil is adding to the inflationary pressure, with Brent crude around $107 a barrel and WTI above $103 as disruptions to Middle Eastern energy infrastructure continue. Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline remains shut following attacks, while uncertainty surrounding the conflict and oil flows through the region is keeping a substantial geopolitical premium in crude prices.Markets are now pricing roughly a 92%-94% probability of a 25-basis-point Fed hike on Wednesday, which would take the federal-funds target range to 3.75%-4%.In pre-market trading, S&P 500 futures fell 0.13%, Nasdaq futures fell 0.13% and Dow futures fell 0.26%.Check out this morning's top movers from around Wall Street, compiled by The Fly.HIGHER -Vera Therapeuticsup 16% after reporting that trutakna met all prespecified endpoints of the final efficacy analysis of the ORIGIN 3 trial in adults with primary IgA nephropathyEtsyup 3% after Oppenheimer upgraded shares to Outperform with a $90 price targetEli Lillyup 1% after Berenberg upgraded the stock to Buy with a price target of $1,400, up from $1,220UP AFTER EARNINGS -Vera Bradleyup 12%Forgent Power Solutionsup 8%DOWN AFTER EARNINGS -Dave and Buster'sdown 12%Kestra Medicaldown 9%LOWER -Enovadown 20% after withdrawing its applications with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System related to the proposed acquisition of Grasshopper BancorpSyscodown 2% after a $1B secondary share offering priced at $81 per share
Anthropic CEO Warns of Out-of-Control AI, Tech Stocks Plunge
"Pacing the frontier" of AI development, expressed by the CEO of Anthropic in a high-profile blog post this weekend ,was added to the wall of worry for investors, sending the industries within the Tech sector most exposed to AI sharply lower on Monday. While the issues of higher oil prices due to Middle East instability and rising interest rates remain concerning, the debate over the threat of out-of-control AI was top of mind for the markets today. Semiconductors, Computer Hardware, Memory, and Semi Equipment names were uniformly sold off. Conversely, SaaS and Infrastructure Software stocks, along with IT Services - areas of the Tech sector thought to be under duress from the consequences of a speedy AI buildout - outperformed, with especially pronounced strength among cybersecurity stocks as traders recalibrated expectations of demand in the event that some of the more nefarious risks of AI development without guardrails came to pass. Rotation out of Tech also benefited the traditional defensive sectors Consumer Staples and Healthcare. In the opening hour of the evening session, index futures are flat as AI panic may have subsided into the close. Commodities trading saw continued strength in Energy - WTI Crude Oil was back above $102 per barrel as Iran's top security official contradicted President Trump's remarks that Tehran is clamoring for a deal to resolve the standoff in the Strait of Hormuz. In metals, gold and silver tested multi-week lows as US dollar advance was supported by building expectations of a Fed rate hike this week and Treasury yields making fresh highs across the curve.Check out this evening's top movers from around Wall Street, compiled by The Fly.HIGHER AFTER EARNINGS -Radiant Logisticsup 9.6%ALSO HIGHER -Boot Barn Holdingsup 1.5% after positive Q2 pre-announcement ahead of investor conferencesDOWN AFTER EARNINGS -Dave & Buster's Entertainmentdown 11.9%Kestra Medical Technologiesdown 8.7%The Children's Placedown 0.8%ALSO LOWER -Enova Internationaldown 18.8% after withdrawing application for Grasshopper dealContineum Therapeuticsdown 4.1% after announcing MOONLIGHT-1 trial did not achieve endpointTORM plcdown 3.5% after equity offering
CEO Indicates Net Capex Could Be Below $150 Million Next Year
CEO Darin Harper says: "Our new stores are going to be pulled back as well as some other aspects of the business. I think we can conservatively look at a net capex number that could be $150 million or south of $150 million next year. It is all going to be dependent upon where we allocate capital in terms of our existing business, in terms of entertainment, in terms of some other things like that that we think are going to have a great return. The good news is we have a lot of optionality and a lot of flexibility with that capital. What we've indicated today we could easily be at $150 million or less in net capex next year." Comments taken from Q2 earnings conference call.
