NRx Pharmaceuticals Responds to NY Times Article Correction

NRx Pharmaceuticals stated: "Three days after the New York Times was notified of the false nature of its report, the paper corrected its article to state, 'In a petition filed last year, NRx urged the F.D.A. to ban the nation's supply of ketamine, claiming BZT is a danger to human health. Virtually all ketamine contains the preservative, and the company submitted a toxicology report asserting it could be harmful to patients.' The paper additionally published an editor's note stating: 'An earlier version of this story referred imprecisely to NRx's petition with the F.D.A. The company included a toxicology report intended to buttress its contention that BZT may be harmful to patients.' The Times has now corrected both of its blatantly false statements. The first statement, which the Times removed without admitting to a retraction, alleged that 'scores' of approved drugs contain Benzethonium Chloride. Indeed, to our knowledge, there are only two remaining drugs (of which one is ketamine) that still contain this toxic preservative. The expert toxicology report filed as part of NRx's Citizen Petition clearly demonstrates that the doses of ketamine routinely used in American Hospitals for anesthesia and pain control expose patients to doses of Benzethonium Chloride that have are widely known to be toxic." Dr. Jonathan Javitt, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NRx Pharmaceuticals, said: "The Times has yet to strike the false and misleading comments offered respectively by a psychologist and a doctor who owns ketamine clinics who claim that there is no evidence of human toxicity from BZT. One of those who commented is connected to a major pharmaceutical company that currently sells a ketamine nose spray for $1200 per dose according to the New York Times. NRx seeks to bring a safer, American-manufactured form of ketamine to the US market while demonstrating that old generic drugs can be manufactured in a sustainable manner within our borders. This benefits American patients, American workers, our local economies, and our national security. While we certainly aim to take substantial market share from overseas competitors, any claim that NRx plans to engage in a price-gouging strategy on generic ketamine is baseless. The price of generic ketamine is largely controlled through hospital buying groups. What we have done is reinvented the manufacturing process of an old drug to enable profitable manufacturing in the United States at current prevailing prices."

NRx Pharmaceuticals Demands Retraction from New York Times Over False Report

"The report by the New York Times alleging that NRx Pharmaceuticals submitted no data on the toxicity of Benzethonium Chloride is knowingly false and NRx has demanded a retraction," Dr. Jonathan Javitt, Chairman and CEO of NRx Pharmaceuticals, told The Fly. Javitt stated: "The reporter was clearly fed inaccurate information by individuals claiming to have expertise who appear to have no training whatsoever in toxicology. The New York Times is aware that NRx submitted evidence documenting the toxicity of Benzethonium Chloride to the FDA as part of the Citizen Petition process and this information, presented by a Board-Certified Toxicologist is displayed on the FDA-maintained website. None of the supposed experts quoted by the New York Times has any documented expertise in toxicology. One is a psychologist who worked for a large pharmaceutical company with a competing product. The other is an Emergency Medicine physician who leads a large, cash-based ketamine infusion clinic. All of those quoted focused on the relatively low doses of ketamine used off-label to treat depression and did not recognize the toxic levels of Benzethonium Chloride to which patients are exposed in the on-label use of ketamine for anesthesia and pain control, which constitutes the bulk of intravenous ketamine use today. The simple truth is that Benzethonium Chloride is not allowed by the FDA to be used in pharmaceutical products, hand cleansers, and topical antiseptics. Ketamine is a widely-used drug declared to be a strategic product by the FDA Commissioner and the Secretary of Health. The product is frequently in drug shortage. NRx is seeking approval of the first US-manufactured supply of ketamine in decades. The law requires that inert ingredients in drugs must be Generally Recognized As Safe or proven to be safe on an individual basis. The FDA has declined to list Benzethonium Chloride as GRAS. It has not been added to a drug since the 1970s. Although Benzethonium Chloride was widely assumed to be a necessary excipient to maintain the solubility and stability of ketamine, NRx has innovated a preservative-free formulation that has now demonstrated more than two years of room-temperature shelf stability and sterility, with an expectation of continued stability. NRx believes that a preservative-free presentation of ketamine is beneficial to patients and consistent with current law. In response to NRx's provision of accurate information to the reporter and demand for a retraction, the New York Times has quietly altered some aspects of the article without advising the public of the changes to the original reporting. For instance, the New York Times falsely reported that 'scores' of pharmaceutical products use BZC. After NRx pointed out to the reporter that there are only two identifiable products containing BZC, both of which were formulated in 1970 (one of which is ketamine), the reference to 'scores' was removed from the article but the public was not informed of the retraction."
