Prime Minister Mark Carney will double Canada's existing counter-tariffs on U.S. steel and aluminum to 50%, while adding new 50% duties on U.S. furniture, clothing, electronics, smartphones, and gaming consoles. Overall, the retaliatory levies cover roughly $20B in annual imports. The measures take effect on September 8 and represent a sharp reversal in Carney's earlier conciliatory stance after trade talks between Canada and U.S. collapsed on Friday. Publicly traded companies in the space include ArcelorMittal, Cleveland-Cliffs, Nucor, Steel Dynamicsand U.S. Steel. Publicly traded companies in the aluminum space include Alcoa, Kaiser Aluminum, Rio Tinto, Century Aluminum, and Constellium.DEPUTY ROLES:The Department of Health and Human Services is planning to create two new deputy commissioner roles at the Food and Drug Administration, one of which would focus on technology and the intersection of health and artificial intelligence, CNBC's Annika Kim Constantino. Publicly-traded companies operating in the space include Pfizer, Merck, Bristol Myers, Eli Lilly, AbbVie, Amgen, Medtronic, Abbott, Boston Scientific, Stryker, Intuitive Surgical, GE HealthCare, Teladoc, and Oracle.U.S.-IRAN:In a post on Truth Social, President Trump stated, "The failing Islamic Republic of Iran is not paying large segments of their military, while at the same time killing protesters, even when they are not protesting, at levels not seen before. It is a humanitarian crisis of epic proportions, and must be stopped, NOW."
Dow Jones Surges Over 600 Points as Markets Eye Fed Policy Meeting
The major averages were mostly higher, with the Dow up over 600 points as investors brace for a pivotal stretch of earnings and the start of the Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting, with renewed concerns over artificial intelligence spending and rising competition from Chinese chipmakers weighing heavily on technology shares. The Federal Reserve begins its July policy meeting today, with markets focused less on the expected interest rate decision and more on guidance from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh following Wednesday's announcement.Meanwhile, oil prices continue to retreat as diplomatic efforts to preserve the ceasefire between the United States and Iran ease concerns over disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz. The decline in crude has helped temper inflation worries, although it has done little to offset the broader weakness in technology shares.Get caught up quickly on the top news and calls moving stocks with these five Top Five lists.1. Nasdaq Plummets Amid Chip Maker Sell-Off
Stocks fell sharply on Friday and closed the week with losses amid another round of selling of chip makers along with geopolitical tensions. The Nasdaq was the laggard as semiconductor manufacturers plunged on concerns that hyperscalers will invest less in AI infrastructure and worries about improving Chinese AI models. Meanwhile, pro-inflationary risks gathered momentum as the war in the Middle East continues and fuel costs pick back up. Adding another potential headwind, President Trump claimed in an address last night that China interfered in the 2020 presidential elections, risking the economic truce that has been holding since last year's tariff exchanges.Get caught up quickly on the top news and calls moving stocks with these five Top Five lists.1.
