About Siacoin
Siacoin (SC) is the native utility token of Sia, a blockchain-based distributed, decentralized cloud storage platform. Sia acts as a secure, trustless marketplace for cloud storage in which users can lease access to their unused storage space. Agreements and transactions are enforced with smart contracts, and Siacoin is the medium of exchange for paying for storage on the network. The main goal of the project is to become the 'backbone storage layer of the internet.'Sia was originally announced in May 2014 before being revised and re-announced a year later in May 2015. It officially launched in June 2015.

Siacoin whitepaper summary
Sia is like a decentralized Dropbox that lets you rent storage space directly from other people instead of a big company.
Think of it as Airbnb for computer storage - people with extra space can rent it out, and others can store their files there securely.
The system uses special contracts and regular checks to make sure your files are actually being stored properly, with automatic payments handled through its own cryptocurrency.
Let's break down how Sia works in simple terms.
At its heart, Sia is built on storage contracts, which are like digital agreements between two people - one who wants to store files (the client) and one who has extra storage space (the host).
These contracts work like a rental agreement for digital storage space.
When you make a contract, you're saying 'I'll pay you X amount to store my files for Y amount of time.'
The host has to regularly prove they're actually keeping your files safe - imagine if your landlord had to send you photos every week proving your stuff is still in your storage unit.
To make sure your files are super safe, Sia breaks them into pieces and spreads them across multiple hosts.
This is like making copies of your house key and giving them to trusted friends instead of keeping just one.
Even if some hosts disappear or have problems, you can still get your files back from the others.
The system uses 'proof of storage' to verify that hosts are keeping their promises.
It's like doing random spot checks - the host has to show a random piece of your file to prove they still have the whole thing.
If they can't prove it, they lose money they put up as collateral.
To protect against bad actors, Sia uses a reputation system where hosts lock up coins as a security deposit.
The more coins they lock up and the longer they lock them for, the more trustworthy they appear to potential clients.
Sia uses two types of digital tokens: Siacoins and Siafunds.
Siacoins (SC) are the main currency of the network, used for all storage-related transactions.
They're what you use to pay for storage or earn for providing storage space.
Think of them like the dollars you'd use to pay for storage on Dropbox or Google Drive.
The supply of Siacoins has evolved over time.
While mining rewards initially started at 300,000 coins per block, the current system gives out about 30,000 SC per block, with new blocks created every 10 minutes.
Siafunds (SF) are like ownership shares in the network.
When someone creates a storage contract, 3.9% of the contract value goes to Siafund holders.
This works similar to how Airbnb takes a percentage of each rental.
The project has maintained its commitment to fair distribution.
Unlike many newer crypto projects, Sia never conducted an ICO or premine.
Instead, the development team earns through Siafunds, ensuring their success is tied to actual network usage.
The economic model has proven sustainable, with the network processing millions in storage contracts and maintaining a healthy ecosystem of hosts and renters.
While the original whitepaper outlined certain developments like Bitcoin two-way pegs, Sia's roadmap has evolved significantly.
The project now focuses on Utreexo implementation, which will make nodes more efficient and scalable.
This is like upgrading from a filing cabinet to a smart digital storage system.
Recent developments include new file sharing features and improved redundancy mechanisms.
The team is also working on enhanced privacy features and better tools for developers to build on top of Sia.
The project has expanded beyond pure storage to include content delivery network (CDN) capabilities through Skynet, a decentralized alternative to traditional web hosting.
Future improvements continue to focus on making the system more efficient, improving the reputation system, and making it easier for users to manage their storage contracts and files.
Originally created by Nebulous Inc. (now called Skynet Labs), with David Vorick and Luke Champine as the primary authors of the whitepaper, the project has grown significantly.
The development team has expanded to include multiple contributors and developers working on various aspects of the protocol.
The core team maintains regular development updates and community engagement through forums and social media.
The original revenue model using Siafunds continues to operate as designed in the whitepaper.
This structure has proven effective in aligning the team's incentives with network growth and usage rather than speculative trading.
The project maintains strong open-source principles, with all code publicly available and development discussions conducted transparently through GitHub and community forums.
