About Qtum
Qtum is a decentralized blockchain network that supports smart contracts using the Ethereum Virtual Machine. The blockchain itself is based on Bitcoin’s UTXO model, but uses proof-of-stake for consensus. Because Qtum is a hybrid project that takes the best parts of Ethereum and Bitcoin, it also has the ability to merge future updates from these projects and place them on top of the Team’s own unique developments.Qtum is truly decentralized, there’s no “delegated” proof of stake, or other forms of masternodes required to make it appear fast. Anyone can participate in the transaction validation process, all they require is an internet connection and a device that can run a node. There’s no need to hold coins or vote for a centralized validator. Block targets are set to average 32 seconds, and up to 8000kb of data can be stored in each block. Bundled with SegWit, it’s possible to achieve 1100 transactions per second. Because Qtum is based on Bitcoin, if necessary, a Layer2 network can push this throughput to “millions or billions” of transactions per second with Lightning. The Qtum project supports multiple token standards, including its own implementation of Ethereum’s ERC-20, dubbed QRC-20. Qtum also integrated the BRC-20 standard that appeared on Bitcoin, dubbing it qBRC-20. Along with NFT support, Qtum offers developers more than Bitcoin or Ethereum can do independently. To learn more about this project, check out our deep dive of Qtum.

Qtum whitepaper summary
Qtum is a groundbreaking blockchain platform that combines the best features of Bitcoin and Ethereum while solving key challenges in blockchain technology.
It introduces innovative solutions like the Account Abstraction Layer (AAL) for compatibility between different blockchain models, a unique Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism, and an on-chain governance system.
The project aims to make blockchain technology more accessible and practical for real-world business applications, focusing on enterprise solutions and improved scalability.
Since its inception, Qtum has evolved to become a leading enterprise-grade blockchain platform, with enhanced smart contract capabilities and cross-chain functionality that bridges traditional business systems with blockchain technology.
At the heart of Qtum's technology is the innovative Account Abstraction Layer (AAL), which acts like a bridge between different ways of handling transactions on the blockchain.
Think of it as a universal translator that allows Bitcoin-style transactions (UTXO model) to work seamlessly with Ethereum-style smart contracts (Account model), making it easier for businesses to adopt blockchain technology.
The platform introduces four special commands that make this possible: OP_CREATE for making new smart contracts, OP_CALL for using existing contracts, OP_SPEND for using QTUM tokens in contracts, and OP_SENDER for letting others pay for transaction fees.
Qtum has successfully developed and implemented its x86 virtual machine that works alongside the traditional Ethereum virtual machine, significantly expanding the platform's capabilities.
This advancement allows developers to write smart contracts in multiple mainstream programming languages including C++, Rust, and Python, making it more accessible for traditional software developers.
The platform uses a special type of Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism called MPoS (Mutualized Proof-of-Stake) that's both energy-efficient and secure.
Instead of requiring expensive mining equipment, this system lets people earn rewards by holding and 'staking' their QTUM tokens, making it more environmentally friendly and accessible to participants.
The network has demonstrated robust security through its MPoS system, with block rewards shared between multiple validators and paid out with a delay, making it extremely resistant to attacks.
Recent updates have introduced offline staking capabilities and enhanced DeFi features, allowing token holders to participate in network validation without maintaining an active node while accessing modern financial services.
The QTUM token system started with 100 million tokens, distributed in a way that promotes healthy growth and development of the platform.
The largest portion, 51%, was sold to the public to fund the project's development, ensuring broad community participation and decentralized ownership.
The team and early investors received 20%, while 29% was set aside for business development, research, and community building initiatives.
To ensure long-term stability and prevent market manipulation, some tokens are locked up with a gradual release schedule over four years.
New QTUM tokens are created as block rewards, starting at 4 QTUM per block, with rewards being shared among network validators.
This reward gets cut in half every four years until 2045, similar to Bitcoin's system, creating a predictable and sustainable inflation rate.
The inflation rate starts at about 1% annually and gradually decreases over time, helping maintain the token's long-term value while incentivizing network participation.
Block rewards include both newly created QTUM and transaction fees, providing a sustainable economic model for network validators.
The current circulating supply has reached its intended levels, with the ecosystem showing healthy token velocity and strong staking participation from the community.
Qtum's journey began in March 2016 with the official project launch, followed by the establishment of the Qtum Foundation in Singapore later that year.
The project achieved major milestones with its mainnet launch in September 2017 and the release of its innovative x86 virtual machine prototype in May 2018.
Significant progress continued with the implementation of Lightning Network functionality in July 2019 and a comprehensive upgrade to Qtum 2.0 in October 2019.
Recent developments include the successful implementation of offline staking, enhanced DeFi capabilities, and improved cross-chain functionality for better blockchain interoperability.
The platform has consistently delivered on its promises, introducing new features and improvements that make blockchain technology more accessible and practical.
Looking ahead, Qtum plans to introduce innovative features like confidential assets for privacy, expanded enterprise solutions, and chain-cloud integration.
The team is actively working on developing new scaling solutions and enhancing the platform's DeFi ecosystem to meet growing market demands.
Future developments will focus on making blockchain technology more practical for everyday business use while maintaining high security and decentralization standards.
The Qtum Chain Foundation, registered in Singapore in 2016, leads the project's development with a well-structured organization designed for long-term success.
The foundation is led by three experienced co-founders who serve as CEO, CTO, and Lead Developer, bringing together essential business and technical expertise.
The organization includes dedicated departments for business development, technical development, marketing, and administration, ensuring comprehensive project management and growth.
The team structure emphasizes both technical innovation and practical business application, with specific roles focused on global expansion and community engagement.
Since its inception, the team has grown significantly, now including numerous blockchain developers, research scientists, and business development professionals from around the world.
The foundation has established strategic partnerships with major technology companies and academic institutions to further advance blockchain technology development.
Regular team expansion and strategic hiring ensure the project maintains its innovative edge while adapting to evolving market needs.
