Stocks Decline as U.S. 10-Year Treasury Yield Hits 5%
Stocks closed lower after the yield on the U.S. 10-year Treasury note rose for a fifth consecutive session, hitting the closely watched 5% threshold for the first time since 2007. The yield climbed as high as 5.04% before easing slightly to 5.01%. The renewed rise in oil prices continues to cloud the inflation outlook, particularly as tensions in the Middle East remain elevated and risks to oil supplies increase. The Fed is widely expected to raise interest rates for the first time since 2023 on Wednesday and investors will also closely scrutinize the Fed's updated economic projections, particularly its outlook for inflation and rates.Get caught up quickly on the top news and calls moving stocks with these five Top Five lists.1. Stocks Decline as Bond Yields Rise
Stocks were lower on Tuesday, extending the pullback from the previous session on further pressure from higher bond yields. Long-maturity yields rose further as the escalation of strikes in the Middle East worsened the outlook on energy supply from the region, magnifying inflation risks and a hawkish response from the Federal Reserve. Market participants widely expect the Fed to hike rates by 25 basis points tomorrow as higher fuel prices have driven traction in underlying inflation.Get caught up quickly on the top news and calls moving stocks with these five Top Five lists.1.
