BHP Divests Kambalda Nickel Concentrator to Gold Fields

BHP (BHP) has entered into agreements to divest the Kambalda Nickel Concentrator, or KNC, and a package of tenements and mineralisation rights to Gold Fields (GFI). These agreements will bring KNC and associated tenements and mineralisation rights under Gold Fields ownership and support long-term outcomes for the region, local workforce, communities and the economy. In July 2024, BHP announced the temporary suspension of its Western Australia Nickel assets following oversupply in the global nickel market. The remainder of the WA Nickel assets remain in temporary suspension. BHP intends to review the decision by February 2027, assessing options including divestment, continuing temporary suspension, restart or closure in consultation with relevant stakeholders. These agreements are subject to the satisfaction of certain conditions, including regulatory approvals. BHP will work closely with Gold Fields to ensure a successful transition of ownership. Completion is expected to occur during CY2027.

Northern Star Rejects Gold Fields' Proposal

After Northern Star Resources (NESRF) recently said that it received, considered and rejected "a confidential, opportunistic, unsolicited and conditional non-binding indicative proposal" from Gold Fields (GFI), people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg's Dinesh Nair, Paul-Alain Hunt, Loni Prinsloo and Manuel Baigorri that Gold Fields is considering a sweetened takeover bid to create the world's second-largest gold producer. The company is looking at increasing the cash component of its proposal after Australia's Northern Star rejected its initial approach, though deliberations are at an early stage and there's no certainty Gold Fields will make a revised offer, the sources are reported to have said.
