Thermo Fisher Launches New EMPAD G2 Detector
Thermo Fisher Scientific introduced the Thermo Scientific EMPAD G2 detector, a new detector designed to help researchers see and understand materials in detail. EMPAD G2 enables high-speed four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy. "The EMPAD G2 gives scientists a deeper view of materials and the information they need to explore what those materials can do," said Glyn Davies, president, materials and structural analysis, Thermo Fisher Scientific. "By making advanced 4D STEM faster, more reliable and easier to use, we can help researchers accelerate discoveries in areas such as semiconductors, energy and advanced materials - and ultimately enable new technologies that can improve our everyday lives."
Thermo Fisher Completes Sale of Microbiology Business for Approximately $1.075B
Thermo Fisher Scientific announced that it has completed the sale of its microbiology business to Astorg for consideration of approximately $1.075B, consisting of cash and a $50M seller note. The microbiology business provides antimicrobial susceptibility testing and culture media solutions for clinical, pharmaceutical and food safety testing. The business generated $645M in revenue in 2025 and was part of Thermo Fisher's Specialty Diagnostics segment.

Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures are all in negative territory before the opening bell, while Treasury yields and oil prices are climbing, adding pressure to equity markets.Alphabet and Tesla set the tone for the session after reporting second quarter results late Wednesday. Alphabet posted record growth in its cloud business and topped earnings expectations, but investors focused on the company's increased capital expenditure outlook as it ramps up AI investments.
