这个 Skill 如何工作
Decompose margin changes into quantified operating drivers and distinguish structural improvement from cyclical or temporary benefits. Use when the user asks why margins changed or whether improvement is durable.
Use This Skill When
- The user wants to explain margin expansion or compression with more precision than
mix and cost discipline. - The task is to decompose gross margin, EBITDA margin, EBIT margin, or free cash flow margin changes.
- A thesis depends on whether better margins are structural, cyclical, or inflated by temporary tailwinds.
- The analysis needs to identify which driver deserves credit and which driver is likely to reverse.
Required Inputs
- The margin metric under review and the periods being compared.
- Revenue growth, pricing, product mix, utilization, labor cost, input cost, and opex changes if available.
- Any management commentary about efficiency programs, scale benefits, restructuring, or temporary items.
- Peer or historical context if the user wants to benchmark sustainability.
- The decision context: earnings review, thesis update, or model revision.
Workflow
- Define the exact margin being analyzed and the comparison frame: QoQ, YoY, trailing multi-year, or peak-to-trough.
- Break the movement into the main candidate drivers:
- Price / discounting
- Volume / utilization
- Product or customer mix
- Input cost or wage inflation
- Operating leverage / scale
- Efficiency actions
- One-offs, FX, or accounting effects
- Quantify each driver where possible and identify which ones are inferred versus directly disclosed.
- Sort the bridge into
structural, cyclical, andtemporarycomponents. - Judge the durability of the new margin level and what it implies for forecasting and valuation.
- End with the small set of metrics that will confirm or disprove the attribution in future periods.
Output Requirements
- Use a sell-side-meets-buy-side analytical tone: clear bridge logic, explicit assumptions, no vague summary language.
- Present the margin movement as a driver bridge, even if some pieces are directional rather than fully quantified.
- Be granular enough to separate pricing, mix, utilization, and cost actions instead of bundling them together.
- Flag what is inferred from evidence versus explicitly disclosed by management.
- Tie the durability judgment back to forecast risk and valuation relevance.

Quality Checks
- Confirm the margin definition and comparison period are explicit.
- Check that the attribution separates price, mix, utilization, and cost rather than collapsing them into one bucket.
- Verify the output distinguishes disclosed drivers from inferred ones.
- Make sure at least one reversal risk is identified if margins improved sharply.
- Ensure the sustainability conclusion is tied to business mechanics, not just management guidance.
Guardrails
- Do not give all credit to management execution if input costs or mix tailwinds did most of the work.
- Do not assume temporary cost savings or favorable FX are structural improvements.
- Do not over-quantify when data is insufficient; directional attribution is acceptable if labeled clearly.
- Do not discuss EBITDA margin durability without checking gross margin and opex behavior underneath.
- Do not ignore volume and utilization in businesses with meaningful fixed-cost leverage.
Example Prompts
- Break down why
UberEBITDA margin improved and tell me what part is structural. - Attribute the gross margin expansion at this semiconductor company across price, mix, and underutilization changes.
- Explain whether a vertical SaaS company's margin gain is true operating leverage or just lower hiring plus FX.
