Use This Skill When

  • The user wants to know whether software revenue is durable rather than merely fast-growing.
  • The task is to separate high-quality ARR from services-heavy, promotional, or low-visibility revenue.
  • Retention, upsell, pricing, contract structure, or concentration are central to the investment case.
  • The market may be rewarding headline growth that does not convert into long-duration cash flow.

Required Inputs

  • Company, reporting period, and preferred lens: quarterly, annual, or cohort-based.
  • Recurring vs non-recurring revenue mix, including subscription, usage, services, and one-time items.
  • Retention metrics such as gross retention, net retention, logo churn, or expansion.
  • Pricing model, contract duration, billing cadence, renewal terms, and discount behavior.
  • Customer concentration, partner concentration, and any evidence on sales incentives or booking quality.
  • Optional but useful: peer metrics, deferred revenue, RPO, billings, and cash conversion.

Workflow

  1. Map the revenue base. Split subscription, usage-based, services, hardware, and other revenue streams.
  2. Test visibility and repeatability. Assess contract duration, renewal mechanics, seat stability, consumption variability, and billing profile.
  3. Evaluate customer economics. Review gross retention, net retention, upsell, churn cohorts, and expansion quality.
  4. Look for low-quality growth sources. Flag channel stuffing, multi-year pre-buys, reseller dependence, services pull-forward, or discount-led bookings.
  5. Check concentration and fragility. Identify whether a few large customers, products, or geographies drive the story.
  6. Translate quality into durability. Decide whether the current revenue base deserves premium valuation, neutral treatment, or skepticism.

Output Requirements

  • Give a clear durability verdict: strong, mixed, or weak.
  • Distinguish recurring appearance from true recurring economics.
  • Explain whether net retention is driven by healthy product expansion or by price, bundling, or temporary usage spikes.
  • Link revenue quality to forward growth visibility, margin confidence, and valuation.
  • Note what additional disclosure would most improve confidence.

Output Template

Revenue Base

  • Company / period / reporting basis:
  • Revenue mix by subscription, usage, services, and other:
  • Which portions look inherently recurring vs exposed to volatility:

Quality Scorecard

  • Retention quality: explain what the retention metrics really say.
  • Pricing quality: explain whether price realization reflects product value or aggressive packaging.
  • Contract quality: explain term length, renewal risk, and billing visibility.
  • Concentration quality: explain customer, partner, or product dependence.
  • Cash quality: explain how bookings, billings, deferred revenue, or cash conversion support or weaken the story.

Strong Indicators

  • List the signals that support durable ARR.
  • For each, explain why it should persist through a softer demand backdrop.

Weak Indicators

  • List the signals that weaken confidence.
  • Explain whether each issue is temporary noise, a scaling issue, or a structural problem.

Peer Context

  • Compare the company against the most relevant peers on retention, services mix, concentration, and contract visibility.
  • State where the company is clearly better, similar, or worse.

Overall Durability Assessment

  • One-paragraph buy-side conclusion on whether revenue quality justifies a premium multiple.
  • State the top 3 monitoring points that would change the conclusion.

Quality Checks

  • Recurring revenue is not treated as high quality without retention and contract support.
  • Services, implementation, or hardware revenue is explicitly separated from ARR-like revenue.
  • Retention analysis distinguishes logo retention from dollar retention.
  • Temporary usage spikes or price hikes are not mistaken for durable expansion.
  • The final verdict says what part of growth is trustworthy and what part is fragile.

Guardrails

  • Do not rely on management's "land-and-expand" narrative without cohort evidence.
  • Do not give full credit for multi-year deals if underlying usage or renewal behavior is weak.
  • Do not ignore concentration just because churn has not happened yet.
  • Avoid generic statements like "mission critical" unless renewal and expansion data support it.
  • If disclosures are thin, downgrade confidence rather than invent precision.

Example Prompts

  • Break down the quality of this SaaS company's revenue and tell me how durable it is.
  • Assess whether ARR growth is high quality or driven by weaker sources like services and discounting.
  • Compare this company's revenue quality against peers and tell me if it deserves a premium multiple.
