Use This Skill When

  • The user wants the strongest, non-strawman pushback against a long or short thesis.
  • The task is to prepare for investment committee, PM review, or an internal red-team exercise.
  • A prior thesis write-up feels one-sided and needs a disciplined library of recurring objections.
  • The user wants to know which bearish points are durable thesis-breakers versus noisy debate filler.

Required Inputs

  • The thesis being challenged in 2 to 5 sentences.
  • Company name, sector, and the time horizon of the investment view.
  • Current valuation framing or key assumptions if relevant.
  • Any known bear debates, controversy areas, or prior objections from management, analysts, or investors.
  • Whether the output is for a long idea, short idea, or neutral stress test.

Workflow

  1. Restate the thesis in neutral language so the challenge is aimed at the actual claim, not a caricature.
  2. Generate counterarguments across the main dimensions:
    • Market size and growth durability
    • Competitive pressure and pricing
    • Unit economics and margin quality
    • Management credibility and execution
    • Balance sheet, accounting, or capital allocation
    • Valuation and expectation risk
  3. Score each argument on relevance now, evidence strength, and regime sensitivity.
  4. Separate durable objections from cyclical, already-discounted, or low-evidence points.
  5. Highlight the few counterarguments that would most damage the thesis if proven right.
  6. End with monitoring triggers so the library can be reused over time.

Output Requirements

  • Write in a serious debate-prep tone, as if preparing for a skeptical PM or committee member.
  • Make each counterargument specific enough to be testable, not a vague statement like competition is intense.
  • Rank arguments by thesis threat, not by how often they are repeated in the market.
  • Include short evidence cues or missing-evidence notes for every major objection.
  • Keep the output structured and reusable so the same library can be refreshed after earnings or industry events.

Thesis Being Challenged

  • Core view:
  • Time horizon:
  • What must be true for the thesis to work:

High-Priority Counterarguments

[Counterargument]

  • Why it matters:
  • Evidence supporting it:
  • Evidence missing or weaker than it sounds:
  • Regime sensitivity:
  • What would make it thesis-breaking:

Medium-Priority Counterarguments

[Counterargument]

  • Why it matters less:
  • Evidence:
  • What would upgrade it:

Weak, Stale, or Already-Discounted Objections

[Counterargument]

  • Why it is lower value:

Monitoring Triggers

  • What it would imply:

Bottom Line

  • Most dangerous objection:
  • Most overrated objection:
  • Overall stress-test result:

Quality Checks

  • Confirm the challenged thesis is stated accurately before generating objections.
  • Check that each major counterargument is tied to evidence, not just plausible rhetoric.
  • Make sure valuation risk is addressed separately from business-quality risk.
  • Verify the ranking reflects likely thesis damage rather than popularity of the talking point.
  • Ensure at least one section distinguishes durable risks from cyclical or already-priced concerns.

Guardrails

  • Do not build strawman bears that a serious investor would dismiss immediately.
  • Do not repeat the same objection in different wording across multiple sections.
  • Do not confuse hard to know with bearish; uncertainty alone is not a thesis-breaker.
  • Do not overfit to the current quarter if the thesis horizon is multi-year.
  • Do not claim a point is disproven unless there is direct evidence against it.

Example Prompts

  • Build the strongest counter-argument library against a long thesis in NVIDIA.
  • Stress test my bull case on a vertical SaaS company and rank the top five reasons it could fail.
  • I need investment committee prep for a consumer compounder; give me the non-obvious bear case, not generic recession talk.
