Pricing Strategy Change Detection

Use This Skill When

  • The user suspects the company changed its pricing architecture, discounting discipline, packaging, or contract terms.
  • Growth may be driven more by price realization, mix uplift, or reduced discounts than by unit demand.
  • The task is to infer whether the company has true pricing power or is using tactical levers to protect growth.
  • Competitive positioning or margin durability may have changed because of new packaging, bundles, or channel behavior.

Required Inputs

  • Evidence on list price, realized price, discount rates, bundles, package tiers, seat or usage terms, and contract duration if available.
  • Company commentary, customer signals, peer pricing behavior, or channel checks.
  • Revenue growth, gross margin, churn, volume, and win-rate context if available.
  • The user's objective: detect pricing power, explain growth quality, or evaluate competitive pressure.

Workflow

  1. Gather evidence of pricing change across list price, realized price, discounting, packaging, and contract structure.
  2. Compare signals by product, customer cohort, geography, and channel to see whether the change is broad-based or selective.
  3. Separate likely mechanisms:
    • True pricing power
    • Mix shift
    • Reduced discounting
    • Temporary surcharge
    • Packaging or seat-model redesign
    • Hidden concessions elsewhere in the contract
  4. Assess implications for revenue quality, gross margin, retention, and competitive position.
  5. Determine whether the change looks durable, reversible, or likely to invite pushback.
  6. End with the key watchpoints that would confirm or undermine the pricing thesis.

Output Requirements

  • Use a commercial-analysis tone focused on pricing mechanics, not generic strong demand language.
  • Organize the output around evidence, mechanism, consequences, and durability.
  • Be granular about whether the pricing shift happened through list price, discounting, bundles, or contract redesign.
  • Tie pricing interpretation to both margin impact and customer behavior.
  • When evidence is circumstantial, label the conclusion as inferred and state the strongest alternative explanation.

Key Watchpoints

  • KPI to monitor:
  • Customer behavior to monitor:
  • Peer or channel signal to monitor:

Quality Checks

  • Confirm the evidence distinguishes list price from realized price and discounting.
  • Check that packaging and contract changes are considered, not just headline price moves.
  • Verify the output separates pricing power from mix benefit or temporary surcharge effects.
  • Make sure margin implications and customer-response implications are both addressed.
  • Ensure the durability call includes at least one concrete watchpoint.

Guardrails

  • Do not assume revenue growth acceleration proves pricing power.
  • Do not ignore concessions hidden in contract duration, freebies, service credits, or bundle structure.
  • Do not treat all price increases as positive if churn, win rates, or competitive pressure worsen.
  • Do not overstate certainty when the evidence comes mainly from indirect signals.
  • Do not forget regional and customer-cohort differences; pricing changes are often selective.

Example Prompts

  • Detect whether ServiceNow is gaining real pricing power or just tightening discounting.
  • Analyze if this software company's recent growth was driven by packaging changes rather than true demand.
  • I think this industrial distributor changed pricing strategy after inflation peaked. Map the evidence and durability.

Best used for

When to use it

Detect pricing architecture shifts through product, channel, customer, and discounting signals, then assess durability and margin impact. Use when pricing changes may alter growth quality or competitive positioning.

01 · PRE-MEETING

Prepare a decision brief

The user suspects the company changed its pricing architecture, discounting discipline, packaging, or contract terms. Growth may be driven more by price realization, mix uplift, or reduced discounts than by unit demand. The task is to infer whether the company has true pricing power or is using tactical levers to protect growth. Competitive positioning or margin durability may have changed because of new packaging, bundles, or channel behavior.

02 · TEAM WORKFLOW

Standardize handoffs

Create consistent research outputs across analysts, portfolio managers, and agents.

03 · LIVE UPDATE

Refresh the thesis

Update scenarios after a new catalyst, KPI release, or earnings result.
