Use This Skill When

  • The user wants to explain margin expansion or compression with more precision than mix and cost discipline.

Required Inputs

  • The margin metric under review and the periods being compared.
  • Revenue growth, pricing, product mix, utilization, labor cost, input cost, and opex changes if available.
  • Any management commentary about efficiency programs, scale benefits, restructuring, or temporary items.
  • Peer or historical context if the user wants to benchmark sustainability.
  • The decision context: earnings review, thesis update, or model revision.

Workflow

  1. Define the exact margin being analyzed and the comparison frame: QoQ, YoY, trailing multi-year, or peak-to-trough.
  2. Break the movement into the main candidate drivers:
    • Price / discounting
    • Volume / utilization
    • Product or customer mix
    • Input cost or wage inflation
    • Operating leverage / scale
    • Efficiency actions
    • One-offs, FX, or accounting effects
  3. Quantify each driver where possible and identify which ones are inferred versus directly disclosed.
  4. Sort the bridge into structural, cyclical, and temporary components.
  5. Judge the durability of the new margin level and what it implies for forecasting and valuation.
  6. End with the small set of metrics that will confirm or disprove the attribution in future periods.

Output Requirements

  • Use a sell-side-meets-buy-side analytical tone: clear bridge logic, explicit assumptions, no vague summary language.
  • Present the margin movement as a driver bridge, even if some pieces are directional rather than fully quantified.
  • Be granular enough to separate pricing, mix, utilization, and cost actions instead of bundling them together.
  • Flag what is inferred from evidence versus explicitly disclosed by management.
  • Tie the durability judgment back to forecast risk and valuation relevance.
