Moat Competitive Analysis

Use This Skill When

  • The user wants to know whether a company's competitive advantage is real and durable.
  • A premium multiple, elevated margin, or sustained growth rate depends on moat quality.
  • The task is to compare structural advantage versus temporary execution strength.
  • The question is whether the company can defend economics under competitive pressure.

Required Inputs

  • Target company and the most relevant peers or substitutes.
  • Industry context, customer segment, and purchase criteria.
  • Evidence on product strength, switching costs, distribution, cost position, network effects, data scale, brand, or regulatory advantage.
  • Signs of moat monetization such as pricing power, retention, superior unit economics, or lower acquisition costs.
  • Optional but useful: churn data, win/loss commentary, channel evidence, and historical share stability.

Workflow

  1. Define the relevant moat dimensions for this business. Only include dimensions that can plausibly affect share, pricing, or margins.
  2. Benchmark the target against peers on those dimensions using evidence rather than labels.
  3. Separate structural advantage from execution. Ask whether the edge survives leadership changes, temporary underinvestment by peers, or cyclical demand.
  4. Stress the moat. Test how the business would hold up under price competition, feature parity, channel conflict, regulation, or customer consolidation.
  5. Evaluate monetization. Determine whether the moat shows up in growth durability, retention, gross margin, sales efficiency, or cash flow.
  6. Reach a buy-side conclusion on moat strength, trajectory, and valuation relevance.

Output Requirements

  • Focus on observable competitive advantages, not generic claims like "great brand" or "best product."
  • Distinguish moat existence from moat monetization.
  • Compare against real alternatives, including bundled or adjacent substitutes if they matter.
  • State whether the moat is strengthening, stable, eroding, or unproven.
  • End with a view on whether the premium multiple is supported.

Output Template

Moat Competitive Analysis

Relevant Moat Dimensions

  • List the 3 to 6 competitive dimensions that matter most in this industry.
  • For each dimension, explain why it affects customer choice or supplier economics.

Peer Benchmark

  • Compare the target with the most relevant peers or substitutes.
  • State where the company is clearly ahead, roughly at parity, or behind.
  • Note whether evidence comes from data, disclosures, channel checks, or inference.

Durable Advantages

  • Highlight the advantages that appear hard to replicate.
  • Explain the mechanism: switching cost, data advantage, scale economy, distribution lock-in, ecosystem depth, regulatory barrier, or network effect.
  • Describe how the advantage shows up in real economics.

Vulnerabilities

  • Identify the areas where the moat is overstated, narrowing, or vulnerable to attack.
  • Explain what competitive event would most likely weaken the advantage.
  • Separate short-term execution risk from structural moat erosion.

Valuation Implications

  • State whether the company deserves a premium, parity, or discount multiple versus peers.
  • Explain what part of the moat is already priced in and what part remains underappreciated.
  • End with a one-sentence buy-side view on moat durability.

Quality Checks

  • Every claimed moat dimension is tied to a business outcome.
  • Structural advantages are clearly separated from temporary execution wins.
  • The peer set reflects actual customer alternatives.
  • The conclusion states the direction of moat durability, not only current status.
  • Valuation comments are tied to moat evidence, not admiration.

Guardrails

  • Do not call market share itself a moat without explaining the mechanism that protects it.
  • Do not confuse good management with durable structural advantage.
  • Avoid brand-based arguments unless the brand measurably changes customer behavior or pricing.
  • Do not ignore bundled competition or platform encroachment.
  • If the evidence is mixed, say the moat is unproven rather than forcing a strong conclusion.

Example Prompts

  • Analyze whether this company has a real moat versus peers and whether it deserves a premium multiple.
  • Benchmark the competitive advantage of this business and stress test its durability.
  • Tell me which parts of the moat are structural and which parts are just execution.

Best used for

When to use it

Benchmark moat durability against peers and assess which competitive dimensions justify valuation premiums under forward stress. Use when the user asks whether a company's competitive advantage is real, durable, and monetizable.

01 · PRE-MEETING

Prepare a decision brief

The user wants to know whether a company's competitive advantage is real and durable. A premium multiple, elevated margin, or sustained growth rate depends on moat quality. The task is to compare structural advantage versus temporary execution strength. The question is whether the company can defend economics under competitive pressure.

02 · TEAM WORKFLOW

Standardize handoffs

Create consistent research outputs across analysts, portfolio managers, and agents.

03 · LIVE UPDATE

Refresh the thesis

Update scenarios after a new catalyst, KPI release, or earnings result.
